Is there anyone who hasn't gone fishing and can tell me where I can
get a working copy?

Assuming you mean you downloaded:

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 (x86) - CD (English)
Includes: Professional-Retail;
File Name: en_windows_xp_professional_with_service_pack_3_x86 _cd_x14-80428.iso
Date Posted (UTC): 5/1/2008 11:01:59 PM
File Size: 589.1MB

I just downloaded it, used it to install a VirtualBox VM with no problem.

It does have an i386 directory when mounted as an ISO image - so it will have an
i386 directory when burned to CD.

Can you not just download another copy to verify your download wasn't corrupted?
Or is it not you that has the ability to download and your trouble is with the
support at The Uppsala University?

Do you have another download than what I have referred to?

Maybe you have a horked (bad, faulty) download. Might want to re-download it again
and see if that will work.

Hint. Do not multitask while it is downloading, Leave everything alone during the
download process

There
is no i386 file in the download of XP SP3 from MSDN. I just went into my account
and
read the latter over and over that I posted above

Seeing the content requires running the first step of the setup that copies
files to the harddrive.
It's supposed to be a i386 folder with drivers and stuff on the harddrive
when starting the next step from the harddrive but there is no such files.
The setup is asking for files in the i386 folder on the harddrive and the
setup is terminated.

I downloaded it only a few hour ago - are you downloading exactly what I
described (is your ISO named the same, description/date the same, etc?)

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink

I cannot - unless the same ISO image is not available to you - see why yours
would differ. ;-)

(Again - unless - given the details I have - we are not downloading the same
thing; the picture should clear up confusion.)

The ISO filename is an exact match and I might be able to simulate the same
installation on my laptop if I can clear some space on it.
If the Virtual Machine can't run it, then something is really wrong.

Something is really really wrong since I can't install it on a virtual
machine on another computer and the error was not even contained by the
virtual machine so that the application running the VM crashed the real OS.

to redownload goes nowhere.

Is there anyone who hasn't gone fishing and can tell me where I can
get a working copy?

Assuming you mean you downloaded:

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 (x86) - CD (English)
Includes: Professional-Retail;
File Name:
en_windows_xp_professional_with_service_pack_3_x86 _cd_x14-80428.iso
Date Posted (UTC): 5/1/2008 11:01:59 PM
File Size: 589.1MB

I just downloaded it, used it to install a VirtualBox VM with no
problem.
It does have an i386 directory when mounted as an ISO image - so it
will have an i386 directory when burned to CD.

Can you not just download another copy to verify your download
wasn't corrupted? Or is it not you that has the ability to
download and your trouble is with the support at The Uppsala
University?
Do you have another download than what I have referred to?

setup.exe though

I downloaded it only a few hour ago - are you downloading exactly what I described
(is your ISO named the same, description/date the same, etc?)

I cannot - unless the same ISO image is not available to you - see why yours would
differ. ;-)

(Again - unless - given the details I have - we are not downloading the same
thing; the picture should clear up confusion.)

Your *university* has an MSDN subscription (no "AA" edition is listed at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs...onschart.aspx).
And your association with your university is what?

So did you login using your university's account at MSDN and then
download the file? A limited number of support incidents are included
with each MSDN subscription. Your university may have to pay for
another one to open an incident for you. So what did they say when you
wanted to open a trouble ticket with Microsoft using their subscription?

Where did you try to get the download? Was it from their download page
at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs.../default.aspx?
Can't help you by checking their download since I don't have an
available MSDN subscription (no longer at my prior software development
employer that had all that stuff).

No one here can help you with Microsoft's downloads. We are all just
users here in a peer community called Usenet. You'll have to start
exploring what support resources are available from your university or
from Microsoft at:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs.../aa948874.aspx

Have you asked over in their MSDN newsgroups? According to Microsoft at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs.../aa718661.aspx, they have
forums. There are some microsoft.public.msdn.* newsgroups on
non-Microsoft NNTP servers. They're probably referring to a private
groups at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs.../aa974230.aspx.

NNTP to which you connect (to get at something like microsoft.private.*
groups) so you will need to know the login credentials to use that NNTP
server.

Since the MSDN subscriptions include the "MSDN Library" which is a
wallet containing all the CDs, why not use those?
