unvalidated copy of xp pro locked me out...how do i get my files o

Sorry I forgot to mention another detail. This may or may not be important...
The new HD is SATA and the old is IDE. Although I have a converter for IDE
to SATA, for ease I chose to plug the old HD into the one IDE slot on the
board and left the jumper in the "cable select" position.
Probably not relevent to this particular event, but felt it worth mentioning.

get when you try to access the slaved hard drive?

No, this has nothing to do with WGA. Exactly what error message to you

Ownership and read/write permissions are not the same thing. Also,
permissions are granted on files, not on drives (so I don't know what you
actually did regarding permissions). In the security settings for the files
(or for the folders provided you also inherit changes to it to the files and
folders under it), what are the settings for the Administrators and Owner
accounts? Do they have Full permissions? Are you logging under the
Administrator, admin-level, or owner account after changing permissions?

Okay, don't check permissions on the files on which you took ownership.
Don't check of the OWNER or Administrators account have Full permissions on
those files. Your choice. Enjoy your dilemma.

Before doing stupid things like removing the HD and putting in the new
PC, you should have asked me.

I suggest put everything back as it was and then reboot your system with
either BartPE, Acronis Recovery CD or Norton Ghost CD and you should be
able to copy all your files from the old HD to USB flash drive or CD/DVD.

BartPE can be downloaded from he

You do need to build the CD and burn it to make this work. For that you
need your friend's XP CD again and then you can return it once done.

There are cracks to make things work but I won't discuss here because
you may be highly moral and very religious. I AM NOT AT ALL!!

PC, you should have asked me.

I suggest put everything back as it was and then reboot your system with
either BartPE, Acronis Recovery CD or Norton Ghost CD and you should be
able to copy all your files from the old HD to USB flash drive or CD/DVD.

I figured it out....had to boot into safe mode to gain access. Thanks for
