Default IE 7 & 8 can't connect to secure sites

Okay here is the situation,
O/S: Windows XP sp3
Browser: Internet Explorer 7 (And now 8)

When attepting to connect to a secure site (Not just a password protected
site, I mean ANY secure site) IE just sits with the progress bar half full
and a black white screen. This is not a new system, it has beem working fine
for more than a year.

I have tried the following to correct the problem
Checked that 128 bit encrypto is ok, Reset IE, Reregistered dlls, Installed
IE 8, Ran full virus/malware scans with Trend Micro & SpyBot S&D.

Any ideas or clues?

A shot-in-the dark might be the freeware program "lspFix" and/or
"WinsockXPFix" which sometimes solves strange problems with the
network stack. Couldn't hurt to try:

mmmm... seen this before. How about trying uninstall/reinstall network
adapter in device manager - sometimes firewall issues cause this. Talking
about firewall - have you disabled this temporarily to elimenate? Check
settings in firewall of any 3rd party security software also.
Good luck

First you need to try connecting those sites using Mozilla/Firefox browser.
If you can connect with Mozilla/Firefox then you know your machine's
connection is not at fault. This means you don't have to use any third
party products that are likely to be infested with spywares and anything
that goes with it.

Now you need to remove/uninstall in order: IE8 then IE7 so that you are back
to IE6. I am assuming you have updated your system from IE6 then IE7 then
IE8.

Now test your system to see you can connect to your secure sites with IE6.
If you can connect then you know the system is fully operational.

Now install IE8 (skip IE7 - because you don't need it) and test again.

Step by step approach is the only way to detect where the problem lies.
