Can't install Revo Uninstaller.exe
My new computer came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. Upon receipt
early last month, I loaded many programs, some from CDs/DVDs and others from .exe files that I'd downloaded to my Downloads folder. All installed smoothly, exactly like in Windows 7 or XP (I first installed Start8 and I live on the desktop, not the Start Screen.). Suddenly, programs won't install. I have downloaded .exe files for the new CCleaner, Revo Uninstaller, and a Flash Player update. When I click on each in the downloads folder, NOTHING happens. What's wrong here? How can I get these programs to install? |

One thing I've noticed...sometimes the installer will minimize and simply be waiting for your prompt. If it's minimized and you don't see it, it appears to be doing nothing. I do not run the tiles when I use Win8...but if you are using the classical interface, the installer may just be minimized on the task bar. Try hitting control escape and get back to the classic desktop and just look on the taskbar to see if the installer has started but is running minimized. |

The taskbar shows no minimized thing running. It's as if the install activity just drops off the face of the earth. |

Is there anything you recall having done just prior to the problem? If you can't recall doing anything I'd run a full virus scan and if nothing turns up...run System Restore and go back to a point prior to the problem. |

The taskbar shows no minimized thing running. It's as if the install activity just drops off the face of the earth. Open Command Prompt (You can either right-click and Run as Administrator or just run it). If that won't run or show up, then you're kinda screwed, and might want to try creating another account and running there. In the Command Prompt window, you can use the "cd" command to navigate to where the .exe files are located. Or even, give the entire path in one shot C:\somefolder\somefolder2\myprogram.exe and see what happens. ******* Another possible explanation, is the mapping between .exe type and loading a program, is broken. And that's why the GUI method is not working. You can take a look for these registry entries, and see if they're present or not. The first line means "delete this key", and the second line does a "create this key", as a means to clear the first key of previously stored stuff. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505 Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithList] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithProgids] "exefile"=hex(0): Paul |
