I have downloaded .exe files for the new CCleaner, Revo Uninstaller, and a Flash Player update. When I click on each in the downloads folder, NOTHING happens. What's wrong here? How can I get these programs to install? Try right clicking and take the option to run as administrator I tried that on all three .exes. No joy. The box about "allowing this program to make changes to your computer" shows up, but that's all that happens. At that point you need to give it permission to do so. One thing I've noticed...sometimes the installer will minimize and simply be waiting for your prompt. If it's minimized and you don't see it, it appears to be doing nothing. I do not run the tiles when I use Win8...but if you are using the classical interface, the installer may just be minimized on the task bar. Try hitting control escape and get back to the classic desktop and just look on the taskbar to see if the installer has started but is running minimized. Because of the way I changed the settings and the presence of Start8, I never see tiles unless I purposely go there. I live on the desktop. I tried your suggestion. The taskbar shows no minimized thing running. It's as if the install activity just drops off the face of the earth. Open Command Prompt (You can either right-click and Run as Administrator or just run it). If that won't run or show up, then you're kinda screwed, and might want to try creating another account and running there. In the Command Prompt window, you can use the "cd" command to navigate to where the .exe files are located. Or even, give the entire path in one shot C:\somefolder\somefolder2\myprogram.exe and see what happens. ******* Another possible explanation, is the mapping between .exe type and loading a program, is broken. And that's why the GUI method is not working. You can take a look for these registry entries, and see if they're present or not. The first line means "delete this key", and the second line does a "create this key", as a means to clear the first key of previously stored stuff. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505 Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithList] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithProgids] "exefile"=hex(0): Paul Don't think it's the mapping, he gets the UAC prompt when 'run as admin'. |

I first tried copying the Revo Uninstaller .exe to the desktop. It worked great. Revo Uninstaller is now installed. However.... When I tried doing the same copy-to-desktop-and-install with Ccsetup411.exe, the same drop off nowhere occurred. (Same with the Flash Player update after rebooting.) But here's an interesting sidenote or two: 1. When I tried to delete the copy on the desktop after a failed install attempt, I got this message: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in ccsetup411.exe. Close the file and try again." I'm offered a Try Again and a Cancel option. I have to reboot in order to be able to delete the .exe file. 2. My Norton Internet Security 2014 is acting spookily, hanging up on "Initializing" before a scan. It has never done that before. I may be possessed by EVIL. |

Or it froze or crashed. And this is the result, a locked file. Sometimes you don't have to reboot, just logoff and back on sometimes works too. Also there are utilities that work at unlocking. Also killing ccsetup411.exe through Task Manager or something often works too. 2. My Norton Internet Security 2014 is acting spookily, hanging up on "Initializing" before a scan. Since it was in use but the installer was not completing leads me to believe it was being suppressed ...and very possibly by Norton. |

Norton is now uninstalled and replaced by a trial version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2014. KIS is now in the midst of a full scan. Once that is done I will try to install the CCleaner and Flash Player updates to see what happens. If it turns out to be Norton is the problem, it will be the first time that it's given me grief. But there is so much bad-mouth smoke of NIS that there just might be fire. |

Too late now, but to get a better base-line I would have tried running one of the non-functioning installers prior to installing Kaspersky. Anyway I hope all works out ok |

I think Philo is onto something. It's your AV. I've seen this kind of behavior before with an AV, where the AV and a program "get into a knife fight". It's like a deadlock, where the program can't finish running, and the AV just can't leave it alone. And I don't think any AV is totally immune from this, if the AV pretends to provide "realtime protection". All it takes is a mistake doing "heuristic detection" for this to happen. It's why I dropped my Kaspersky subscription. If your AV program has a temporary disable button, you could have tried that and retested. All without uninstalling it. Paul |
