Seeking Dropbox Alternative
Hi,
I downloaded the newest Dropbox (offline line installer) 3.14.7 because my older version no longer "works". I tried to install it on two different WinXP (SP3) laptops, but got an error. Note: WinXP is in the list of minimum system requirements. SEEKING ALTERNATIVE: I have been using Google Drive as a backup cloud for about 4 years. Is it possible for me to create a "link" to a file in my Google Drive folder, and put that "link" in an email to a friend or relative so he/she can download that file? Or is there another site I can use instead of Dropbox? Thank You in advance, John |

DISREGARD ABOVE POST When I first learned about Dropbox 3 or 4 years ago from a friend, after I signed up, I was able to upload files via my FireFox v28 browser. However, not long after, I could no longer upload any files via FF. My friend told me that I need the DB app in order to upload files. I just found out that I can use my FF browser to upload if I use the "drag and drop" method. I never tried this before. By golly it "works"!!!! HOW I DID IT: I put the file I want to upload on the "Desktop" and move it to the right side. Then I log into Dropbox via FF. I open my "Share" folder then drag the file from the "Desktop" over to my "Share" folder. It works!!!! John |

I just found out that I can use my FF browser to upload if I use the "drag and drop" method. I never tried this before. By golly it "works"!!!! Most online storage sites let you drag-n-drop or browse. If drag-n-drop doesn't work then use the browse method (you get a dialog having you navigate your local file system to select the file you want to upload). Dropbox doesn't describe all of their features in their online help. Seems some features are experimental. They also want to run Flash on their web pages although I don't see any Flash content when enabled (my Firefox is configured "Ask to activate" so Flash doesn't play in a web page unless I grant permission). https://www.dropbox.com/help/4455 (from searching on "drag" in their help page's searchbox) HOW I DID IT: I put the file I want to upload on the "Desktop" and move it to the right side. Then I log into Dropbox via FF. I open my "Share" folder then drag the file from the "Desktop" over to my "Share" folder. It works!!!! You didn't say what is your disk quota at Dropbox. I have the free account and it only has 2.88GB of disk space. I only needed it to transfer small code files (just parts of the program) at a time to a buddy. I have a OneDrive account (used to be called SkyDrive) that has a 25GB disk quota; however, that was before Microsoft lowered it to 7GB. For old accounts (and users that signed it using the web UI within 1 week of notice), they got grandfathered in when Microsoft yanked away the 25GB quota. I have several Hotmail/Outlook.com but I barely managed to happen to login using the web client to refresh my login history to get my primary account grandfathered but missed out on my other Microsoft accounts. After you have an account for awhile, Microsoft ups the disk quota to 15GB. So I have 1 account with 25Gb and the others have 15GB. Still, for how I use online storage, that is plenty and far more than the Dropbox disk quota for a free account. If it wasn't for a history of past use of Dropbox with my buddy, I would drop Dropbox. Their disk quota is too small when compared to other free offerings. With Dropbox's web client, click on the file icon with a "+" overlay to update a file. If you are not using the synchronization feature of Dropbox (or Google Drive, OneDrive, aDrive or other online storage providers) then you do not need their local sync client. Just use their web UI. If all you need is their web client and don't care about the sync feature then you do not have to install any local software. Just use ANY web browser. Google Drive (free) has a 15GB disk quota. As I noted in your first thread here (but which you now started a whole new thread on nearly the same topic), I mentioned that I quit using Google Drive because it wouldn't stay logged in. That means no file synchronization unless you manually visit your local sync folder and notice file(s) aren't going up. Having more room was not an advantage if sync wasn't working. Having to discover the local client was not logged in and doing another login to get it working again (for a few days) was something I was not going to tolerate. Of course, with installing any Google, you get a lot of more software and intrusion into your OS than just their sync client. After uninstall their sync client, you'll do a lot of remnant file and registry cleanup. Google likes to keep everything. Although you think you deleted a file, it doesn't really get deleted - until you use the web client to login into your account using a web browser to flush the Deleted folder. When using the local sync client, it does not show your Deleted folder. So you go deleting files and figure you have lots of free quota left. Yet suddenly you start getting errors on file uploads. Since the local sync client does show the Deleted folder, you cannot flush out that folder (to delete the delete-tagged files). Instead you have to go online via web browser to log into your account to flush that folder. Despite you thinking you deleted the files and not seeing them in the local sync client, they are still in your account and sucking up disk quota. They may get auto-purged after some expiration, like 30 days. That's how Dropbox works, too (no view of Deleted folder, have to use their web site). For Dropbox, deleted items do NOT count against your disk quota. They do at Google Drive. I have an aDrive account that gives me a 50GB disk quota but file size is limited (forget what is the maximum) for a free account. Their local sync account requires a paid account so I just use their web client to upload/download files or provide links to the online copy of the files. |

So Google thinks that I will make an exception for their cookie to my web browser's on-exit cleanup options (which has it purge all cookies on exit). Not going to happen. So Google Drive is not an option for me. I *will* be purging my cookies, all of them, on exit. |
