sp3 download
Where would I get a fairly clean download of SP3 for my Windows XP
disk. My version of wsusoffline only goes back as far as Vista. I see some sites that offer it but would like some kinda recommendation from the more tech savvy. Thanks. |

WSUSOffline avoids "Microsoft trouble" by ensuring the user gets their files from Microsoft, even though a tool figures out the URLs from the manifest. In effect, the tool is nothing more than a download manager in a sense. Your link seems to be showing "canned" large downloads. Which means the Microsoft lawyers should be chasing those dudes. They would have to host on something which is "takedown-proof". How exactly will you build a trust relationship in this case ? How do you know who is behind the project ? I would probably run my WSUSOffline USB stick against a new install, then point the OS at Windows Update for anything which is missing. And that would be a compromise between "traceability" and time. It's going to take more time to do it that way, but I don't have to worry about the reputation of the project making the "canned" downloads. If I have no way to judge these people, I can't very well use their software. As an example, there was a screen recorder program provided by some people in Cyprus. I had no objective means of determining whether they're white hats or black hats. They demonstrated an unsustainable business model (which is supposed to make you immediately suspicious). A relatively large download, no compensation in return. Scans clean. But, I don't know why they're doing it. Even people who are "nice guys", they stage on github or sourceforge or anywhere they can get free hosting, which is proof of a "sustainable" business model. They're not charging you anything, but, they're using "leech" supply methods. The Cyprus project appeared to be hosting their own files. How can they afford to do that ? Dunno. I didn't use the software, even though it scans clean. Paul |

Windows XP SP3 is still accessible from Microsoft. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...ce-pack-3.aspx It's been a while since I did a clean, full XP installation (just to keep my hand in), but IIRC, once you've got SP2 in, and a load of subsequent updates, SP3 will then download automatically as yet another update and install (if you choose to let it). Again, IIRC, it includes IE8. However, you can install it directly. From what I can see, that link above no longer works. However, this one seems to: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/down....aspx?id=23334 -- Ian |

There is an "Unofficial Windows XP SP4" version available (about 1 GB in size) that might be an option for some. You can read about it here (there are several links discussing this SP4 - google it): http://www.pcworld.com/article/25992...ce-pack-4.html or he http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1711...indows-xp-sp4/ or he http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopi...=asc&sta rt=0 for example. From what I've read, I haven't noted too many issues with it, but if one needs the windows updates, it might be worth considering. But I would keep a backup image (pre-SP4) just in case it doesn't work out. |

If you look at WSUSOffline package, you might be able to determine from the scripts there, the URL of the manifest for a particular OS. You can search the catalog server too. But it's possible you have to use IE while doing so. For example, this does a search for KB3093266 http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...px?q=kb3093266 And I tried typing in "Windows 7" into the search box, and it gave a fairly long list of references. But not tuned in a useful way. Paul |
