Most of you probably have newer versions of Microsoft Office than I just
downloaded & installed, where I simply want to ask you what functionality
you find useful in your newer version of Microsoft Office that I won't have
in the MS Office 2007 Pro that I installed today (due to Windows crashes).

We learn a lot on Usenet, e.g., a similar thread a few years ago struggled
to find even ten useful functionalities in Windows 10 that weren't already
in Windows XP or Windows 7 (usually gained with added software).

As I recall, together, we could find, at most, fewer than a half dozen
truly useful functionalities that we used which were in Windows 10 that we
couldn't do at all in the older Windows versions.

*Will Microsoft Office turn out to have similar or different results?*
o I don't know as I haven't used (or needed) the newer Office versions yet.

Keep in mind that:
1. this NG will not give a representative sample of office users.
2. the newest office is 2019 / 365 and is mostly / all cloud based.
3. people on the NG here don't have much use for office.
4. to get a representative sample you would need to poll office
personnel that actually use MS Office, i.e.: advertising and
marketing firms.

With that said... My fav Office is 2003.
On the older w7 company laptop I have complete 2003 and 2010 with bits
of 2007, 2013, 2016, and access to 365. I use it daily, every
day, and nearly all day long. I do not like 2016 since MS removed
many of the previously available settings options.
On the new w10 company laptop I only have 365. It is useless to me
since it is made for people that sit in an office with a fast
internet connection. Often I do not have access to internet or when
I do its a 3 kb/sec connection. However, 2019 / 365 does have many
"apps" that are not available on a 2003-2013 full install.
I have no need for those apps but can see how people sitting in
offices across the world would use them constantly. 2019 / 365 is
really made for smart phones.
Check out the listed differences between 2016 and 2019
on this website. You can see that 2019 / 365 is made for collaboration,
web users, and smart phones:

Aside from the problem of compatibility with the newer file formats, there
seems to be little additional in terms of what most people need since
around Office 2000-2003. In fact many prefer the older user interface. I
have customers that would still be using those old versions if they did
not need to deal with the 2007+ file formats.

Pretty much my opinion. I have 2007 and it's worked for 13 years and I
have never wanted for more. That said, I have moved to Linux and use
LibreOffice. So for continuity I removed MS and put LO on my Win 10.

If I have a document issue, my wife is still on Windows and can do any
fixing with 2007 there.

I was using a student version of Office 369 but the license expired.
I've been running Office 2007 on various bare metal and virtual WinXP
machines and Microsoft Photo Editor derived from Office 2003. Older is
better and cheaper.

Flash Fill in Excel is useful, though buggy. still. It was introed in O 2016,
there’s known bugs which haven’t been fixed as of O 2019. The
goal-seeking, also in Excel, has had some bugs fixed. Macros, particularly
but not limited to, Excel, have improved. Outlook has better behaviour with
non-MS (cough, Gmail) accounts. Word has some bug fixes, notably with the
Tables and Pictures (bit-mapped images) sections. PowerPoint has had changes
to how themes work, improvements to layouts, new themes, a new (and very
annoying) design ‘help’ feature. some other odds and ends. Access got
some bugs fixed but is still Access.

I could probably have lived with Office 97 (98 on Macs) but the bug fixes and
some of the rest is nice to have, though not essential. I haven’t paid for
Office since 97/98; I had ‘free’ copies due to taking various courses
which had ‘free’ (translation: you paid for it as part of the tuition...)
Office installs and do some adjunct instructing at a local uni and thereby
have free access to Office and all MS OSes from DOS 3 up. Including server
software, which is how I got my home ADDS network set up. I use MS Office
because I have to round-trip files to others who use Office, and LibreOffice
and iWork have been known to have problems round-tripping. (MS has had
compatibility problems, too; O 2007/8 could and did have round-trip problems
with O 2010/11, especially PowerPoint PPTX but not PPT files. That was fixed
in O 2013, there was no O 2014 for Mac.)

Are you a student or work in an educational establishment of any kind?
If so, you should be able to get a new license of the software at no charge.

I have noticed that M$O 2019 has an artificial block in it
that does not allow it to run on Windows 7. M$ is playing
hardball to get everyone to downgrade to Windows 10.

I though M$O 2003 was very useful and did not like
the migration to tiles.

I currently using Libre Office, but it has its own voluminous
list of problems, but it works. I also use the abandoned Word Pro a lot
too.

M$O "seems" to get more and more bloated and less useful
with time.

The free "upgrade" from Windows 7 still seems to work as well, despite
the official offer having expired a long time ago. So that may well
be another "nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more" from MS to encourage
people to update. I have done this quite a few times for customers
recently who needed or wanted Win10 for one reason or another and all
of them have activated at no charge.

A lot of people are with you on that one. Lots of complaints from people
who suddenly had to relearn how to do what they needed.

Libre Office is a hot mess, but at least it's a *free* hot mess and it
does work pretty well for what it is. I prefer something less bloated,
so if something more than a simple text editor is needed I'll usually
use Abiword.

I have been doing a bunch of them too. Warming: ANYTHING changes on
your computer that they can detect and you
lose your license. I will love to sign up for that
class action suit.

I use upgrade when something getting better: faster,
more useful, more stable, fewer bug, etc..

Libre Office is a hot mess,

Good description. It would help if they fixed reported bugs and took
enhancement requests, but it is what it is :'(

Right now it is about as useful as Word Perfect for DOS.

Word Pro is free now too. It is missing a bunch of nice feature, but it
works really well and can eat envelopes
alive. Libre Office can not print an envelope for its
life, despite all the complaining on its bug reporter.
And Word Pro's division tabs are wonderful. LO is
dragging their feet on that one two.

If you only want text editing, a great programmers text editor that is
stripped enough to use over ssh, is Geany. I use it
exclusively for programming.

I wasn't aware that LibreOffice has trouble printing an envelope. Good

I still use MS Office 2007 SR3. Before that, I was using 2003 and
2002/XP in W7. I also have the (lat/new)est LibreOffice as a back up. I
will keep using them as long as I can! I do agree M$O keeps getting more
bloated and less useful with time like everything else.
