Default USB Port on TVs

Does anybody know what is the purpose of a USB Port on modern TVs?

It does nothing on my TV. I can't record programs via this port; I
can't run DVD drive via this port so what exactly is it for?

I can't think of any purpose of it.

My TV has a Wi-Fi and Ethernet port and both works so they are OK; I
don't have a DVD drive on it so I thought the USB port might be there
to attach an external drive but no it doesn't work.

The Hard Disk in the set-top box works as it can record programs.

Now What is the USB port for? Anybody can think of its use?

that depends on the tv, but among the various possibilities includes
attaching a usb flash drive or hard drive for viewing photos & videos,
sourcing power for accessories such as a chromecast or fire stick,
connecting a keyboard and/or mouse for multimedia apps, firmware
updates and diagnostics in case of a hardware problem.

Oh dear!. Why did you get this message? Are you sure you are using the correct Newsgroup compliant newsreader? Try reinstalling Mozilla Thunderbird to see if it makes any difference.

Many *can* record programmes onto a hard drive/memory stick

I'd say almost all can view photos or movies on the disc/stick

maybe to add a wifi dongle

maybe to add a keyboard/mouse

maybe just to provide 5V power for e.g. a chromecast/firestick type device

maybe for firmware updates

If the tv supports it you can insert a flash drive that contains video
files (MP4, AVI, MKV). If the flash drive is large enough (of if you use
an external hdd), then you can pause your tv, rewind, forward and
record.

If you have an extra HDMI port as well, then you can install a Google
Chromecast which will use the USB port for power.

What I don't understand is why do you post it on a newsgroup for Windows
10. AFAIK most smart tvs are Android.

It's probably to play media that is actually on the drive. That is
what mine wee for on my last two TVs. Turn on your TV and plug a flash
drive into the port and see if a prompt comes up.

The original purpose of TV USB, was for firmware only.
(At least, this is the one-line explanation in the manual.)

It was only later that the port had multiple purposes.

If you had provided a TV make/model, we could determine
what generation your TV is.

It can also function as a power port, when a user wants
to ChromeCast or similar. Some of the stick-devices,
have a USB cable for powering, and an HDMI-in port for video.

And in a few cases, due to a lack of programming of the
CPU inside the TV set, the port really does "sweet nothing".
When they say "it's for firmware", there's no evidence
that this is true. It's just an excuse for "the subassembly
we bought had that connector so we're stuck with it".

Mine on both a Samsung dumb TV and smart LG TV will play media files
like movies, and music, audio books etc.. The dumb Samsung could have
it's firmware updated via the USB port. It can also be used to charge
cell phones etc., or power the DTV antenna, or a ROKU box.

Whether it sends or receives, I mean the little thing you plug into the
USB port that makes the mouse work with the computer. ;-)
