Default NIS 2004 or XP problem

posted here about using AVG FREE and recently adding NIS 2004. I also
posted asking how to stop programs from launching at startup because my
formerly lightening speed computer is now slower than a snail. It takes an
eternity to run any program with many eventually hanging. I have been
shutting down programs that I don't need after startup until now as speed
has not been an issue. Now suddenly we are going gray trying to run email.
It is painfully slow while connecting to the server, but that is the server
and is hopefully temporary. What I don't understand is why just launching
the program (OE and every other program as well) is so slow. Do other NIS
users experience this or is something else wrong? I am going to
un/re-install NIS tonight to see if that makes a difference. I hope that
this is not simply the effect that NIS has on my computer. If so, out it
goes!

Thanks in advance for any opinions or advice.

Greetings --

Using NIS does cause a noticeable performance hit.
