Default Screen Resolution & Color Quality Settings change on their own

Using Windows XP Home. The system boots up with the display
settings at 800x600 pixels resolution and 32-bit color
quality. However, at the end of the booting process, the
whole screen turns blank for a few seconds and then
reappears but the settings are now 640x480 pixels and 8-bit
color quality. Happens every time I boot. Wasn't always
this way. I can of course re-set it manually for the
session, but why does this happen?
