Default Windows Messenger / Outlook Express

Hi, I was having problems stopping Windows Messenger
launching simultaneously with Outlook Express or
requesting updates whenever I launched Internet Explorer
(and I didn't want to update the program, because the
newer version seemed to cause problems with my anti-virus
software). Anyway, I was able to correct this using
regedit by adding an entry which would stop the program
from running (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;302089). Now, however, I find that whenever I launch
Outlook Express, the program freezes for about a minute,
presumably whilst it tries and fails to launch Messenger.
Is there any way to fix this (bearing in mind that I
already tried disabling the 'run with Outlook' option in
Messenger, which proved ineffective)? Thanks.

Greetings George,

To fix this, simply close Outlook Express if it's opened, then download and run this .reg
file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...ssenger_oe.reg

After this, Outlook Express will open normally again.

I have a similar problem only it launches AOL IM instead. Is this the same fix for myself or do you know of one? Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Yes this should help, if it doesn't, just open up AOL Instant Messenger, click the My AIM
menu, Edit Options, Edit Preferences, click the Sign On/Off on the left (it may be listed
differently depending on what version you have), and uncheck 'Make AIM my default instant
messaging program' and click OK.

Thanks - I will try it. Once I do that it won't change my default IM program to the "messenger" or "windows mesenger" will it. They're both a pain with their auto-launching.
