Default .net passport help

Hi,

Can anyone explain the following to be please!

I have a .net passport setup on XP. If I go to user accounts and select my
account and then "change my .net passport" it tells me what my passport is.

If I go to a website such as Microsoft that uses a passport I find myself
signed on so it would suggest my passport is working.

The thing that really confuses me is this....

If I go to user accounts, select my login and then go "manage my network
passports" and then go to "stored user names and passwords" I see my
passport. If I then remove my passport from here everything else seems to
work as before but the passport is not shown in that window anymore? What is
it that causes this field to be populated? The reason I ask is that on my
in-laws PC that use passports I see nothing under "stored user names and
passwords yet their passports work fine!

Any help appreciated.

Regards,

Paul

Default .net passport help

Greetings Paul,

There are two entries in the 'Stored username and passwords' that relate to Passport. The
first, is your Passport which you've already found. The second, is the Passport.Net\*
(Passport) entry. This entry is the one which stores your saved Passport login and password,
so if you remove that one, then you'll be prompted to sign in.

So to recap, your (Passport) is simply the *name* of your Passport
(that would appear in the drop-down box), and Passport.Net\* (Passport) is the saved *login*
and *password* of your Passport (within that Windows XP account).

If your in-laws show nothing there, they've probably turned off the feature which actually
saves Passports within Windows XP (which you can do, and continue to use Passport websites
and Messenger). If you want the same (keep in mind that your password will no longer be
saved), simply download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...lenetcreds.reg
and then reboot to see the change (you'll also probably want to clear out the box, although
not required as Windows will ignore that information after this is applied).

Default .net passport help

Jonathan,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm still slightly confused!

On my PC I had exactly what you suggested, passport.net\* (Passport) and

I removed
by using the "remove" option under "Stored user
names & passwords"

I still automatically log into passport websites?

Is that correct?

Regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Yes, you'll still automatically log into Passport sites as long as that Passport.Net\*
(Passport) entry remains.
