Sharing files between 2 XP machines via a crossover ethernet cable

Picsou wrote: Hello evrybody I have the following 2 PCs: - My home desktop computer - Windows XP Home edition - My office laptop computer - Windows XP Pro edition - configured to be connected to our LAN Both machines are equipped wit an ethernet card. I do have a cross-over ethernet cable. What I want to do: - When I come home, I want to connect my "Office Laptop" to my " Home Desktop". - From my "Home Desktop" I want to have access to all the files on my "Office Laptop". What I am looking for = The most simple way to configure this: - I am not a network wizard (rather the contrary) - I am not familiar with TCP/IP and all that stuff - Maybe NETBUI is an "option for idiots" for me ? Your help will be much appreciated, but please take into account that I am completely stupid when it comes to ths kind of things - step by step instructions would be much appreciated. Thank you so much in advance for your help. Picsou A crossover cable connection should work fine. In theory, it can cause problems with some network cards, but I've never seen such a problem in the real world. Is there a network administrator at the office? If so, I strongly recommend consulting with that person before you do anything else. Your office might have security policies that forbid connecting computers to other, non-secure networks. If the office network is set up as a domain, you need to be especially careful to connect to other networks in a way that retains the domain settings. I wouldn't install NetBEUI under any circumstances. It's an un-supported protocol in Windows XP, and using more than one protocol is very likely to cause problems. If both computers are configured to obtain an IP address automatically, they should be able to communicate with each other. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. Sharing files between 2 XP machines via a crossover ethernet cable
That's the way the businesses become vulnerable... The careless and
unconcerned user wants to have access to all the files on the corporate computer from the home network or give this computer to the whole family etc. No wonder the corporate networks are full of spam and viruses and the corporate secrets ain't the secrets anymore. |

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your answer. I ran the wizard several times and I am sure that it asks the right questions. The problem is that I do not have the right answers. And that is exactly why I asked for help :-))) |
