Default Viral Damage 2

I got a virus called "Trogan.ByteVerify" & it screwed=20
things up a bit. It changed the Boot Devices, Boot=20
Priority & Boot config. so that on start-up my system=20
tried to boot off of a secondary drive. The virus also=20
set my system clock back to 1/01/02. I fixed everything &=20
Norton Anti-virus removed the sucker but I'm still having=20
a problem. The system restarts by itself unexpectedly=20
while you're in the middle of something. I can't get an=20
answer from Symantec. I also contacted Intel, as it is=20
their BIOS which is infected. Would anyone know where to=20
look and what if anything can be done to stop the OS from=20
automatically rebooting? I got a trial version=20
of "Registry Mechanic" to check for registry changes, but=20
I don't like third-party registry editors. That would be=20
my last option.

Please help!

low-level format the drive and start over.
clear the CMOS and re-flash the BIOS to get it out of=20
memory.

********My reply:*****

Can't I just get a flash BIOS update from Intel instead?=20
I don't want to have to format and re-install everything,=20
just because the system is rebooting by itself. There=20
must be some other workaround. Would anyone know?

You're barking up the wrong tree with the bios flash. That Trojan doesn't
affect the bios at all. Symantec has removal instructions at their website,
or you could try one of the other virus removal tools. I've found that with
some viruses, you're better off running multiple removal tools until they
all come up clean.

Check out McAfee's stinger tool to see if it detects that particular Trojan.
If it does, run it over and over until it comes up clean. Afterward, you
might want to run a couple of thorough virus scans using whatever you've got
installed, plus the ones available online. There's a chance that you've got
a secondary infection. These days, if you've got one virus, others tend to
appear as well, so if you're just trying to kill one off, it may not do
anything with the other bugs (or hackers) that have crept in.
