Default Sharing "Program Files" and "Windows" folders

On my network, the server with a tape backup is on a Windows ME machine. I
have Windows XP Pro on my notebook with NTFS.

I want the server to be able to back up my computer's hard drive in its
entirety.

I have been successful in getting the server to access almost all of my
folders. It, however, cannot access the Program Files and Windows folders. I
would like to have a complete backup of the entire hard drive. (Also,
windows explorer on the server is not able to access those folders either.)

Is it possible to get the server backup to read those folders?

Thanks.
Steve

Default Sharing "Program Files" and "Windows" folders

Hi Steve,

Thank you for posting!

I belive that Steve Winogard's suggestion is helpful. However, I have some
supplemental information.

Please follow Steve Winograd's steps to disable Simple File Sharing. Then
right click "Windows" folder, choose "Sharing and Security" from the
context menu. Make sure that it has the same permission as others which can
be accessed from the server. Also follow the above steps to check the
permission of "Program Files" folder.

I hope that it is helpful.

Have a nice day!

Thanks & Regards,

Default Sharing "Program Files" and "Windows" folders

I have been struggeling with sharing the program files for some time now on
our new XP Pro machines. I have Un-checked "Use simple file sharing
(recommended)" but still can not access these files. I even tried sharing the
sub-directories in the "Program Files" folder and still get the "access
denied" error. Have not yet installed SP2, is that the issue here ? Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. Disable simple file sharing on XP Pro, which will allow
networked access to all folders:

1. Open My Computer and click Tools | Folder Options | View.
2. Scroll to the end of the advanced settings.
3. Un-check "Use simple file sharing (recommended)".

After disabling simple file sharing, un-share and then re-share
everything to set up new permissions. SP2 isn't the issue.
