Default Messenger conflicts

I'm getting pretty frustrated here. I've been having
probelms with my MSN 6.1 changing from 'away'
to 'online'. I was advised this was because of conflicts
between MSN Messenger 6.1 and XP Windows Messenger. I'd
like to retain MSN 6.1 as I enjoy its functionality.
I've tried uninstalling Windows Messenger, but I just got
home and sure enough, I was 'online' again
How do I totally uninstall Windows Messenger? (I also
remember hearing totally unisntalling Windows Messenger
will result in an inability to use MSN Remote Sharing &
Whiteboard)

What are my options here?
