Default XP client to non-XP client (win msgr -- msn msgr)

I'm running XP Home with the latest version of Windows
Messenger and my dad has Windows ME with the latest
version of MSN Messenger. We can instant messege but
can't video conference. We can invite, but can't
accept. Error message: unable to start video... XP
client /non-XP client... something-or-other. I've tried
using MSN Messenger on my pc--still no video chat. Works
fine if I'm using Windows 98se. Why wouldn't the [XP]
messenger be able to link video with earlier versions of
Windows?
