Default Viewing screen on TV: no colour

I have acquired a DVD-kit to connect my PC to my TV. I get both image and
sound on the TV, but

1. there is no colour on the TV screen, and

2. for media applications showing video in a window the contents of that
window is black on the TV screen.

I have tried connecting to the s-video slot of the SCART connector and the
video slot of that connector, and I have also tried connecting to my TV via
my video recorder.

I have found out so far by experimenting and contacting the machine producer
(hp):
1. hp says that the DVD-kit does not recode the video signal properly. hp
says that maybe there is a software solution to this. Does anybody know?
(By the way, I have found that there is colour on a TV screen when using a
newer TV than mine.)
2. The video window problem is now solved. It was necessary to define the TV
screen as the primary screen.
