partitioned drive
my pc is partioned into 2 drives C: & E:.
XP is on C: and contains the boot. it is 5GB and nearly full which is slowing my PC down. E: is 35GB and is empty, formatted and healthy. How can i activate it so i can either transfer some data over, or so it becomes just one hard drive again? Any help would be greatly appreciated |

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existinÂ*g partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to purchÂ*ase and use a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8Â*. http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/ The alternative is to perform a "clean install" of Windows XÂ*P: How to Partition and Format a Hard Disk in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows XP - Shell/User Microsoft Newsgroups Be Smart! Steve
Try Disk CleanUp to remove Temporary Internet Files and the System Restore option in the More Option tab of Disk CleanUp. You may be able to relocate folders / files to the second drive. To move programmes use Add / Remove Programs in Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs to uninstall programmes. Create a Programs Directory on your D drive and reinstall there. Some other notes you may find useful. Create a My Documents folder in another partition and copy ( not move ) the contents of My Documents to your new folder. Then delete the files in your My Documents folder ( if you encounter problems deleting use Shift + Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin ). You will also need to change Default File locations in the Microsoft Office programmes you use. For Word go to Tools, Options, File Locations, highlight Documents, click on Modify and change file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options, General and change default file path. For Temporary Internet Files select Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, Temporary Internet Files. Settings, Move Folder. To move the Outlook Express Store Folder select in Outlook Express Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder, Change. http://www.tomsterdam.com/insideoe/files/store.htm -- Hope this helps. Steve Healey typed: my pc is partioned into 2 drives C: & E:. XP is on C: and contains the boot. it is 5GB and nearly full which is slowing my PC down. Being nearly full may be a problem, but it is *not* slowing your computer down. How full the drive is has no effect on speed. E: is 35GB and is empty, formatted and healthy. How can i activate it There's nothing to activate. so i can either transfer some data over, If you want to transfer data over just do it. You can move files between C: and E: just like you can between the hard drive and the diskette drive or the hard drive and the CD drive. or so it becomes just one hard drive again? Unfortunately, no version of Windows provides any way of changing the partition structure of the drive nondestructively. The only way to do what you want is with third-party software. Partition Magic is the best-known such program, but there are freeware/shareware alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial, so you should be able to do what you want within that 30 days. I haven't used it myself, but it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs here. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup |
