Re-installing Windows XP
If I replace the disk drive, can I use the re-installation disk Windows XP
(Home Edition) that came with my Computer to load Windows. There was no important information on the contaminated disk. Do I just put the re-installation disk in the drive & follow instructions, or do I have to do some things prior to loading it. Can't find any info on "RE-INSTALLATION" of Home Edition. Please help! Thanks. |

Hi
What kind of XP CD do you have? If it's an OEM version then it is limited to the first disk it was installed on. -- Will Denny MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Please reply to the News Groups "Terry" tredmunds(remove wrote in message ... MS's EULA claim is that installation is limited to the first computer it was installed on, not the first disk! Why are you spreading this obvious LIE? -- Peace! Hi
If it's a 'recovery' disk, contact Dell to see if they can help. -- Will Denny MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Please reply to the News Groups "Terry" tredmunds(remove wrote in message ... Terry:
Dell's website has extensive instructions on how to re-install Windows XP with the disks that came with your computer. I have replaced my hard drives twice with no problems re-installing Windows XP. It can only be re-install on the same computer. Unless you have made extensive component changes, there should not be a problem. "Terry" wrote: I have a Dell Dimension 4500 (2yrs) Computer. What do you mean ""If a recovery disk". If what is a recovery disk? I told
you the disk was a Reinstallation CD of Windows XP (Home Edition) from Dell which I received with the computer. Do you understand what I asked? Would you like me to rephrase it? Thanks. I hope that's a sarcastic tone to that last post - for
someone asking for help, that's too rude not to be funny. Recovery disk - Reinstallation CD are interchangable terms used to describe CD's consisting of an OS capable of bringing the computer in question back to a previous state. You should be able to reinstall XP on your new Disk with no problem, but you might just save yourself the hassle of it by making an image of your old drive, and moved that image to your new harddrive. -- Peace!
