Default Parallel-to-USB with unsupported Xerox printer

I am attempting to help a family member remotely with a printer. OS: Windows
XP Pro. Printer: Xerox Workcentre XL2140df. The printer is parallel-only,
so I picked up a Sabrent USB-DB25F parallel-to-USB adapter. XP does not
detect the printer, either automatically or with the Add Hardware Wizard.
When I install the printer manually using the newest drivers from Xerox's
site, the printer is added, and jobs spool to it and disappear as if they
were being printed, but they are not (no activity on the part of the
printer). Advice?

So did you install the driver for the USB to parallel adapter? (If it's
needed for XP)
A common problem is getting logical LPT1 to point to the usb port used by
the adapter.
Since the printer driver knows zilch about USB, this is necessary.

Contact Xerox and determine if the device supports this configuration.
