Default D-Drive Recognition

I placed a CD in my CD drive, but nothing happens. I therefore went to "My
Computer", and there is no indication of any CD drive. All I see there is
"Local Disk: C" and "3 1/2 Floppy; A".
I am using a Dell computer, with Windows XP Professional. Version 2002,
Service Pack 2.
I tried to run the setup utility in the BIOS. I saw several drives listed,
and I set them to "auto" (the alternative was "off"). This did nothing.
What must I do in order to run a CD on my computer?
