external monitor setup

i have a gateway laptop and i want to connect a lg flat screen monitor to it
to be used as the primary monitor from now on. i can not figure out how to
swith to the lg and make it the primary monitor from now on. any steps or
advice?

On your laptop there is a two key press combination that
will toggle the display from the internal laptop's LCD to
the external. It is always the Fn key held down while one
of the function keys (F1 through F10 or F12) being pressed
quickly and released (just like you were typing the
character). I have one laptop that the key combination is
Fn + F5, one is Fn + F3 and still another laptop is Fn + F7.
I don't know what combination will work for your Gateway.
Look at the F key keycaps and look for the letters LCD/CRT,
a picture of a monitor or similar.

This key combination will be a "three position" toggle.
With the external LCD turned on and connected to the
external VGA port one press will cause the laptop's internal
display only, the next will shift it to the external monitor
only and a third press will shift it to both screens
simultaneously. It takes a while for the display to shift
so don't repeatedly press the Function key but give it time
to change.

As a side note, if you watch video (movies of various types)
on the laptop, some laptops have a limitation in how the
display will "push" the video to the devices. Some laptops
don't have the power to show movies on both the internal and
external display and normally the external display will
blank out when video is shown.
