Default USB Problem

I bought a reconditioned pent 4 with win xp pro IE 7, but when I try to
install my pixma ip1000 canon printer; the software installs fine, but when
it gets to the "driver" part of installation, I get the message that the USB
port is "faulty".

The USBs are working ok with other harware devices. I have tried to install
a driver from the Canon website, but the directions on decompressing the file
and installing it don't seem to work. also it says: "d'click setup.exe
file", but I can't find where this file is.

I have taken the printer in to Canon but they tell me it isn't worth
repairing as it is
out of warranty.

I have checked the USB problems in "Disscussion" but don't understand the
terms used: "ghost norton" "mirror drive" etc.

I would really appreciate some advice please.

Default USB Problem

If the USB ports work with other devices, have you tried the printer on
another computer? Have you tried replacing the USB cable with a known good
one. I have had USB cables go bad with repeated plugging/unpluging.
