CAUSE
Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file=20

name.=20
Most likely the name has been misspelled, or the path to=20
the file is incorrect. There are many different ways to=20
create a file path; the method used depends on how you=20
are trying to access the multimedia content. Below are=20
examples of the correct syntax for common methods used=20

to=20
gain access to multimedia files.=20
MORE INFORMATION
To Play a Multimedia File Located on Your Computer
DriveLetter:\DirectoryName\FileName

DriveLetter is the letter associated with the disk where=20
the multimedia file is located (usually C:\). Directory=20
is any folder in which the multimedia file resides.=20
Please note that backslashes are used between each=20
directory name and the colon following the DriveLetter.=20
Filename is the name of the multimedia file. DriveName=20
and FileName are required parts of the path.=20
DirectoryName is optional, depending on where the=20
multimedia content is stored.=20
To Play a Multimedia File Located on the World Wide Web
Protocol://DomainName/DirectoryName/FileName

Protocol is a set of formats and procedures that enable=20
computers to exchange information. Protocols used by=20
Windows Media Player include HTTP (Hypertext Transfer=20
Protocol) and MMS (Microsoft Media Server protocol).=20
DirectoryName is optional, depending on where the=20
multimedia files are located on the Web site. FileName=20

is=20
the name of the multimedia file. Please note that the=20
protocol is followed by a colon and two forward slashes,=20
and a forward slash is used between each folder name as=20
well as the file name. Protocol, DomainName and FileName=20
are all required parts of the path. DirectoryName is=20
optional, depending on where the multimedia content is=20
stored.=20
To Play a Multimedia File Located on a Local Area Network
\\ServerName\ShareName\FileName

ServerName is the name of the computer on the Local Area=20
Network where the multimedia file is located. ShareName=20
is the shared folder, located on the server, in which=20

the=20
multimedia file resides. FileName is the name of the=20
multimedia file. Please note that two backslashes=20

precede=20
the ServerName and single backslashes appear between=20

each=20
folder name as well as the file name. ServerName,=20
ShareName and FileName are all required parts of the=20
path.=20
To Play a Multimedia File Located on a Network, Using a=20
Protocol
Protocol://ServerName/ShareName/FileName

Protocol is a set of formats and procedures that enable=20
computers to exchange information. Protocols used by=20
Windows Media Player include HTTP (Hypertext Transfer=20
Protocol) and MMS (Microsoft Media Server protocol).=20
ServerName is the name of the computer on the network on=20
which the multimedia file is located. ShareName is the=20
name of the shared folder, located on the server, in=20
which the multimedia file resides. FileName is the name=20
of the multimedia file. Please note that the protocol is=20
followed by a colon and two forward slashes, and a=20
forward slash is used between each folder name as well=20

as=20
the file name. Protocol, ServerName, ShareName, and=20
FileName are all required parts of the path.=20
Resolution
Ensure that file name is not misspelled and the path to=20
the file is correct and try again. If you received the=20
error message by clicking a link on a Web page, contact=20
the content provider for an updated link.=20

Note that the error message can also occur if you are=20
playing an .asx file and the .asx file refers to a path=20
that does not exist (possibly because of reorganized=20
content on the host site). The path to the .asx file is=20
correct; the problem is that a path embedded inside=20
the .asx file is no longer correct. Retyping the path to=20
the .asx file does not resolve this issue.=20
