Alternatives to LogMeIn Free for remote access from one PC to another
I see that LogMeIn have just announced that they are withdrawing access to
their free remote-access accounts and LogMeIn will become subscription-only. Does anyone know of other products that provide free remote access so one PC can access the desktop of another in another location. I don't need anything fancy like the ability to hear the sound from the remote PC or to be able to transfer files or to send print jobs to a printer on the remote PC. I just need to be able to see the desktop so I can (for instance) set up recordings on Windows Media on the remote PC while I'm away from home, or access emails that exist only on the remote PC. All the things that I could do using LogMeIn Free. |

I've just downloaded and installed it, and it's great - it can transfer files between PCs and (at least over two PCs on the same LAN, with no WAN in between) it can play videos (with sound) almost in real time. I bet once you put an ADSL WAN with a maximum uplink speed of 448 kb/sec in between, things slow down rather dramatically :-) But then the ability play videos remotely isn't really part of the requirements. I presume I just need to autorun C:\Program Files (x86)\TeamViewer\Version9\TeamViewer.exe from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run to make the client end of it on the remote PC start whenever the PC is started (as for LogMeIn). I'm surprised the installation doesn't set up an autostart - as far as I can tell. |

You install the program or use the portable version and you ask others that they download TV QuickSupport. All they need to do is click on the EXE and tell you a login and pass. -- s|b |

You don't say which version of Windows you have, but some versions include a remote desktop program from MS. I believe I used the MS one too plus many others as well. What I hated about all of them was the one sending the desktop to the other machine was busting its butt. Meaning it hits the CPU very hard and some machines could be in danger of overheating. -- Bill Asus EeePC 701 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC Windows 2000 SP5 - OE6 - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 |

On each PC where I installed TeamViewer, it automatically set itself to autostart with Windows, which is exactly the behavior I wanted. I'm not sure why yours didn't but you should be able to easily change it. -- Char Jackson |

And seeing the desktop and doing anything on that computer from another one, right? -- Bill Asus EeePC 701 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC Windows 2000 SP5 - OE6 - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 |
