Default Alternatives to LogMeIn Free for remote access from one PC to another

I see that LogMeIn have just announced that they are withdrawing access to
their free remote-access accounts and LogMeIn will become subscription-only.
Does anyone know of other products that provide free remote access so one PC
can access the desktop of another in another location. I don't need anything
fancy like the ability to hear the sound from the remote PC or to be able to
transfer files or to send print jobs to a printer on the remote PC. I just
need to be able to see the desktop so I can (for instance) set up recordings
on Windows Media on the remote PC while I'm away from home, or access emails
that exist only on the remote PC. All the things that I could do using
LogMeIn Free.

I use Teamviewer too.

You don't say which version of Windows you have, but some versions
include a remote desktop program from MS.

Yes, but in my opinion, TeamViewer is *much* easier to use.

Things like Teamviewer and Logmein use a central hub which means you
don't have to configure routers to allow incoming traffic (by port, of
course). But if you're prepared to do this (and
http://portforward.com/
will tell you how - usually easy) you can run a VNC server on the target
machine, and connect when you like. Of course you need a good password
on it, and you might need a Dynamic DNS service (like noip.com) if you
don't have a static IP address, but it works, and I've never had a
security incident. UltraVNC is quite good, although you have to make
sure you don't click on the prominent DOWNLOAD links which are actually
ads.

Thanks. I've just downloaded and installed it, and it's great - it can
transfer files between PCs and (at least over two PCs on the same LAN, with
no WAN in between) it can play videos (with sound) almost in real time. I
bet once you put an ADSL WAN with a maximum uplink speed of 448 kb/sec in
between, things slow down rather dramatically :-) But then the ability play
videos remotely isn't really part of the requirements.

I presume I just need to autorun C:\Program Files
(x86)\TeamViewer\Version9\TeamViewer.exe from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run to make the
client end of it on the remote PC start whenever the PC is started (as for
LogMeIn). I'm surprised the installation doesn't set up an autostart - as
far as I can tell.

Uhmm... Have you considered reading the instructions? grin

Just having fun. LOL

I used to use UltraVNC which worked fine, but it was too much hassle to
set it up. Nowadays I use TeamViewer. Yes, they show ads after you close
the program, but it's easy to set up. You install the program or use the
portable version and you ask others that they download TV QuickSupport.
All they need to do is click on the EXE and tell you a login and pass.

I believe I used the MS one too plus many others as well. What I hated
about all of them was the one sending the desktop to the other machine
was busting its butt. Meaning it hits the CPU very hard and some
machines could be in danger of overheating.

On each PC where I installed TeamViewer, it automatically set itself to
autostart with Windows, which is exactly the behavior I wanted. I'm not sure
why yours didn't but you should be able to easily change it.

Mine doesn't show ads when I close it. Instead, it pops up a small dialog
that says "Thanks for playing fair!", with a single Close button.

I have never seen that behavior here. Everything looks normal, CPU-wise, on
the sending machine.

Okay let us clarify. We are talking about operating another computer
from a remote location right? And seeing the desktop and doing anything
on that computer from another one, right?
