Default Build 17083

I am no longer running my insider preview. I lost my hard drive and of
course the copy.

I just got an insider email from MS explaining some of the new features
in 17083 build. I'm interested in one particular item they touched on.

"A new Font Settings page + and fonts in the Microsoft Store. Preview
more font capabilities such as color and variable fonts and grab even
more fonts directly from the Microsoft Store."

This seems to imply, at least to me, that they are bring back the
granular control of font sizes. Am I reading between the lines too
much? Are they really listening to us??

Obviously this is aimed at someone running the latest insider preview copy.

How do people lose a hard drive? what are they doing on their
machines? I have NOT changed a HD for more than 12 years and my machine
is still running fine. The machine is Dell Optiplex 760.

How could I change fonts used by the desktop (e.g. icon font)? The whole
settings page was gone starting with 1709 if not earlier!

Hey, I'm just quoting the Microsoft Insider email. Not having the
insider preview any more means I can't verify their statement. I'd sure
like to see that font adjustment feature back, but you know MS and their
lack of control given to the user.

**** happens Good Guy! **** happens.

Actually I have an image and luckily it was loaded in a VM so there
would be no license issue but I just haven't had time to reload VMware
to set it up again. I've got more pressing issues.

Also new drives have incredible capacities on the cheap but at the
expense of reliability. Had a large number of 1T drives bite the big
one. Still have some ancient 1G drives that are still error free...

If Micro$oft didn't remove that settings page, we would not have needed
an extra virgin freeware to do it.

Here's a picture of a Font Setting.

https://s14.postimg.org/lupxjrk41/fonts1.gif

The interface:

1) Doesn't show the current font selection.
Is it Segoe ? Dunno. No font was currently
highlighted when I scrolled down, and there
was no summary at the top.

2) There are no size adjustments on that page.

But the emojis are "purdy". And that's important
when I'm licking the screen of my SmartPhone. I
don't know what a desktop looks like with that font
enabled.

I happened to click the Themes item just above
the Font menu item... and the Settings screen
just "disappeared". I took this as an omen
and shut down :-) That machine is currently
disconnected from the 'net, as I was comparing
093 to 101 just to see if the Disk Defragmenter
was busted on both OSes, and it appears to be.
The Defragmenter won't run.

And I got my sound back on 093, by reinstalling
a RealTek driver sitting in my downloads folder.
Loss of sound only started happening recently.

You can tell a release is coming, because the
quality is dropping... fast. I don't really
think they ship the stuff they show us, and
a parallel stream (all fixed up), is baking
in the wings. That's my guess. Their test
strategy doesn't appear to be linear. I don't
think showing me a broken OS is "A/B testing".

17083 was replaced by 17101 yesterday.
I don't know what you mean by 'granular control of font sizes' but so
far as I can tell the control displays all the installed fonts, with
examples, tells how many 'font faces' each one has, permits an a
sample to be displayed in sizes from 8 to 72pt, shows its metadata and
provides an uninstall button. Installed fonts can be searched and
displayed according to a long list of languages.
I don't think it's something that I will ever need to use.

Way back in the late 80's I had an IBM Model 50. Lost the hard drive on
that. That's the last time I had a drive go kaput! I think it's pretty hard
to lose a hard drive today though.

I've been running PCs since the first IBM PCs, and provided office
support at work up to the first Pentium Fives, as well as my own at home.
The first drive I lost was last fall, and two so far this year. To be
honest, one of those two was probably about five years old, and run
continuously all during that time, as I don't shut down my system any
more. Today's drives run to tolerances the earlier drives could only
dream of. That means greater capacity and speed, but it also lessens the
available margin of error before something goes bad.
One of my bosses from the early 80s told stories of using emery cloth to
smooth the disk (drum actually) surface after a head crash. We've come a
long ways baby.
The other thing to remember is that there are more people using PCs, with
a greater percentage reporting their problems in forums like this, then
ever before. It used to be you fixed it yourself, got a friend to help,
or took it to a repair shop. Now you can bitch on the internet before
fixing it yourself, getting a friend to help, or taking it to the repair
shop. Perception is a powerful thing.
