Swap files number

Back in the high$$ RAM days we used to 'inflate' the pagefile to defer apps slowing down to do read/write to disc instead of 'in memory'. I think we used to term it 'swapfile' because of its interaction with OS and apps. We used to call it the "swap file," because that was its name. But then when I was introduced to computers in college, 1 computer occupied several rooms. So what do I know! Computers varied enormously in size, just as they do today. I started working as a programmer in 1962; in those days some computers were so big that they might take up several rooms, but the one I started on was an IBM 1401, which was roughly the size of a refrigerator. |
