Following a thread at TechGuy Networking forum about file sharing between 95
and XP. XP has "simple sharing" enabled. Shared folder on XP has both "Share this folder" and "Allow network users to change my files" checked. 95 has all sharing set correctly. Both computers can see each other and ping by IP and name Xp can copy flies/folders from the 95 and copy from the XP to the 95. 95 can copy from the XP, but can not copy to the XP. Any ideas? |

Know working second hand like this is a pain. Op is working with JohnWill at TechGuy which is why I am asking around insted of sending him here. He did not mention any specific messsage, so I will ask. What makes it really hard to understand is that he can edit shared files on the XP from the 95, so he has to have write pemission on the XP. |

The problem is that XP is a more secure filesystem than Windows 95. Even with Simple File sharing turned on in XP, you may still need to have the Windows 95 user account to exist on the XP. |

Things are becoming more weird. This morning went back into Services to make sure all the necessary ones were started. They still were. He can now copy from the 95 to the All Users Shared Folder on the XP. Still cannot copy from the 95 to any other shared folders on the XP, even though he can manage the folders contents. He is happy with that. |

If the shared folder is in your user-profile (e.g. inside My Documents) then it is likely that NTFS filesystem permissions are preventing writes to the disk by anyone other than the owner. You find these on the Security tab of Properties... and this tab is only visible if Simple File Sharing is OFF. (Yet, the settings still take effect even when the tab is not visible.) On XP Pro you can adjust the permissions (Add 'Everyone' as this account is not computer-specific) On Home it is more difficult to do so, and the best answer is to share a new folder in the root of C: "dlsayremn" wrote: Following a thread at TechGuy Networking forum about file sharing between 95 and XP. Anteaus,
Thanks for the reply. So "Manage" does not include write to disk. That would explain what is happening now. Can copy (write) to All Users Shared, but can not copy to other shares, even though he can do everything else. Do you know if one cna turn off "Simple Sharing" so he can make that change, then turn "Simlpe Sharing" back on?
