Open With is missing
Hi All,
I have a customer whose Right Click context menu does nto have "open With". There are TONS of Google hits on this that tells you to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Op enwith]@=”{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}” Problem: That is already the case. Anyone have a fix for this? Many thanks, -T |

I have been going into setting and doing it by extension, but what a pain in the ass. |

Many thanks, -T Followup: I found that if I go into the registry and rename the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT file extension, the next time I open the extension, the issue is corrected. I won't even speculate. |

This is still a pain in the ass as the customer has two different DWG viewers that both have their pluses and minuses. He can't open the non-default one with Open With as it is missing |

What you probably did is remove windows knowledge of what to do with that particular extension. Now it has no recourse but to present you with an "open with". |

And [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dwg exists. The problem is that there is no "open with", only "open" with ..dwg and .pdf. |

I'd have to do some research, but it would help me if mine was broken as well, hard to see if something fixes it when it's working correctly. Is this a user-limited thing? IE if you log as Administrator, does it work? Regards, -- ! _\|/_ Sylvain / ! Now it has no recourse but to present you | with an "open with". | This works on older systems. I haven't tried it on 10: ----------------------------------------- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\openas default value: "Open With..." HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Zopenas\command %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1 ----------------------------------------- What that's doing is using rundll to directly call the function in shell32.dll. For those who don't know, rundll32.exe is a special program that accepts numerous commandline parameters to perform various system functions by directly calling methods in system DLLs. More simply, you tell rundll a system library and a function, and it calls that function. It's not useful to call any old function, but Microsoft have designed a number of them for just this purpose. For anyone who's curious, there are lists online of what can be done with rundll. By putting the command under the * key it works for all files, which is nice if you want to do something like open a JPG in a hex editor instead of the default image viewer. I have the same CLSID as listed above 09799.... It points to a COM object from shell32. My sample is just a different way to do it. If you have the facility to check exported functions in shell32.dll you should find that OpenAs_RunDLL is among them. If so, the method I've provided should work fine. |
