Distinctive Ring
Distinctive Ring is not supported by Windows XP. Therefore, Windows XP Fax
will answer every incoming call it receives. The only alternative is to install an external switching device to your phone line. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Murray Lang" wrote in message ... It is possible to set up Fax Console on XP to answer on distintive rings only? |

Distinctive Ring
As Russ says, Win XP's Fax Console does not support distinctincive
ring. An external switch box which does would allow you to switch fax calls to your modem and voice callls on a separate number to your phone. You can also get modems that are "distinctive ring aware", but for these to work, the modem, XP drivers, and Fax software must _all_ have this capability. The switch box is probably the better solution. If it detects the fax CNG tones, it sends a ringing signal to the telephone jack to which the fax machine or fax modem is connected. If it does not detect the CNG tones, it sends a ringing signal to the telephone jack to which the regular telephone or answering machine is attached. An incoming caller continues to hear the ringing signal while the switch determines what to do with the call. A difficulty arises if the computer also expects incoming data calls which would use the same jack as the fax modem. The computer would answer the data call as a fax call unless you had software which could route the call accordingly within the computer. This adds another layer to the connection. -- Earl F. But to pay the telephone company extra for distinctive ring each month and then pay $140.00 for a device which can detect a fax call regardless of which line on which it rings seems to be wasteful. Why not use the device on a single line and save the $5.00 to $10.00 the telephone company charges each month for distinctive ring service? -- Earl F. Parrish |
