Why would you need an updated driver when the one you're using works????

For graphics drivers, at least, there are performance improvements with
each release. Nvidia is excellent for this. Otherwise, admittedly, there
is no point other than the fact that the manufacturer discovers bugs and
wants to update the drivers to prevent you from experiencing them.
Wireless drivers are a perfect example of hardware which sometimes is
prevented from working correctly by a bad batch of drivers.

The Q-stor brand, I couldn't track it. It was claimed

It looked for all the world to me, like some

Sometimes the manufacturer's site will not have Windows 8 drivers but
the Windows 7 drivers will often work just as well.

When I set up a Win 8 system, I used Driver Navigator which did a good
job of tracing the right drivers for every component that needed them,
downloading them and installing them.

It costs a bit of money but the time it saved me on flogging around
and risking getting the wrong thing made it a good buy.

The site is he

And apparently an IRDA FIR device, does need a miniport driver.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc961385.aspx

(Protocol stack - FIR path provided by third party.
FIR driver considers the controller chip, and the connected transceiver
next to it on the circuit board.)

http://i.technet.microsoft.com/dynimg/IC213608.gif

(Mentions miniport driver)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...(v=vs.85).aspx

If you can't find a web site for an original Q-stor driver,
you can always check the VID/PID coming from the device
and go searching the web based on those values. In Device
Manager, you can get that information if the thing is visible
right now.

In the list here...

http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids

An example of an IRDA device would be

9710 MosChip Semiconductor
7780 MCS7780 4Mbps Fast IrDA Adapter

In that case, VEN=0x9710 and DEV=0x7700 hexidecimal.

So it may be possible to track down a driver, without using
the info printed on the outside of the thing.

I got my Palm IIIxe at Christmas 2000. It comes with a parallel cradle
for syncing to the computer. When I upgraded the computer did not have
a parallel port. That is when I got the IR device, and synced the Palm
using the IR port. That worked until I got Windows 8.

So the question now is it worth the time and money to get the Palm to
sync to Windows 8, (I am now retired, so scheduling is not nearly as
important, but it is nice to take notes.) The Palm is in good
condition, and I hate to just put it in a drawer and forget about it.

And if you don't want to pay any money at all, you can use SlimDrivers.
It does an excellent job and finds you drivers for your OS regardless of
whether the manufacturer is still releasing them.

Exactly.

There is none. If a person insists on holding onto hardware for a
decade, they should also consider using GNU/Linux rather than Windows.
Once the Linux kernel supports hardware, the support never goes away.
That's a gigantic advantage over Windows.

I hate to be slow but was the grammatical error in the image
intentional to promote humour? If so, it didn't work for me. I just
find things like that sad. They are so BBC.

I'm pretty sure it is intentional. I just downloaded the image, so I
can't tell for sure. But I find it hilarious. :-)

If you want to add a parallel port to the computer,
get one of these. This is what I use. It has a PCI Express
connector. It does more modes than a "USB to printer"
adapter would do. I run a JTAG programmer cable off it.
And Windows 8 is listed in the compatibility section
on this site. I got the adapter for less than the list
price.

I like that thought thread. While I can still sync with my desktop
through the IR adapter, do you know if you can get a USB parallel port
adapter so I could use it with my laptop.
