Default Decided Which Newsreader

Hi

After much debating I've decided to install MesNews. For now anyway.
Since I already purchased OEClassic it makes sense to keep it, for now.
If anything changes with OEClassic, Opera Mail is my second choice.

Before I install MesNews is there anything I should be aware of so that the
installation goes smoothly?
I could not find on their web site or in search, instructions or
configuration for MesNews.
So I hope when I download the program it'll also have instructions included.

In setting up this news account is it pretty much done the same way as OE6
or is it different with this newsreader?
e.g. news.optonline.net is my news address server.
Any tips & help is greatly appreciated.

To Silver Slimer:
As for Firefox, I blame the problem I had with this browser on one of their
updates. It was using a lot of cpu usage, getting virtual memory messages,
computer kept freezing & became so slow. I uninstall programs & files, added
more memory, to narrow down my issues were from FF. Thinking delete it &
reinstall it could solve my problem. Could not through Add & Remove program
or would it allow me to fix it. Tried in safe mode as well still couldn't
remove it. All it would allow me to do is use their 'fix-it' & it did fix my
issue but only for a short time. My computer (os xp) just got worst. As to
how I ended up with a new computer.

Has anyone had any dealings with Yahoo & knows their email address? I could
not find it anywhere.
In reference to my customized homepage (My Yahoo) not loading completely.

Again thank you to all who have been helping me.

Diane

Yahoo claims to have a couple different versions of "My Yahoo".

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/my-yahoo/e...847.html#cont1

Their so-called feedback page. With room for a single
line at the bottom of the page.

https://yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/212117-my-yahoo-

Click this link and scroll down. Just to get a flavor of
what unhappy users look like.

https://yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/2...ersonalization

You see, no "successful" company wants to provide tech
support. They instead, want to tease you, by making you
type woeful postings, and then not respond in any
tangible way.

*******

Setting up newsreaders, is more or less the same from
one to the next. Port number, server name, user name
and so on. If the news server uses a username/password
combination, you also want to tick "Always Request Authentication",
so the program will ask for a password to complete the connection
during the session.

*******

Uninstalling Firefox.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

Another example:

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/...alling+Firefox

"If the Uninstall Wizard does not run, you can start it
manually by running helper.exe, which is located by default in
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\uninstall\helper.exe
"

The uninstall.log file, next to helper.exe in that folder,
appears to be a list of stuff that needs to be removed.

If your user account privileges have changed since the
original installation, maybe that would cause a problem.
Such as if your user account was part of "administrators group"
and now it no longer was. Maybe that would affect the ability
to remove some of the files or something.

A well written uninstaller should also keep track if a
step fails and record it somewhere for later. Silently
failing isn't a very useful behavior.

The uninstaller technology for Firefox, appears to be
NSIS, an open-source project. So if you need a search
term, that is a term you can try.. The "helper.exe" program,
presumably comes from a compilation of the NSIS project
source code.

MesNews is fairly easy to set up if you are familiar with
newsreaders and not that hard if you're not. I've been using it
for a while so if you have questions as or after you have it set
up please ask. I may not have an answer but I'll do my best.

I forgot to mention another group where you might be able to get
asnwers about any news reader - "news.software.readers". As you
might expect there are people there that are familiar with just
about any news reader you can think of.

MesNews has mega features. Much to explore.
I have used OE, Thunderbird, Live Mail and others and always come back
to MesNews.

Just add the spell check feature (link on MesNews page). I works
great.

Just a note. When you have subscribed (or any other time) and want to
easily mark ALL as read, then mouse click a news group and then hold
the Ctrl and hit A then T. Down-arrow to the next newsgroup and
repeat.
Even though the highlight in on the news groups, the key action work on
the posts.

You can nickname the newsgroups. I love that.
You can mouse-drag any left tree item to move it up or down in the
tree.
Click on the date column to get the current date first.
The original starting post stays in the same order. Other news readers
mess around with sub-posts making the original post order wrong for my
liking.

You can suppress all the commented out post text. Look for the
screwdriver (left-most icon) on the post text header. Then click for
menu "Quote Level" "Delete All Quotes" (does not delete, just
suppresses them). That gets rid of all the already read stuff so you
can get to the meat. Almost like forced top-posting.

Hi

Thank you everyone for your help & suggestions.

Paul, as of tomorrow Yahoo has told me I'm now going to have a new homepage.
Ugh!
And I did read all those complaints of no one liking it. We'll see, if I
don't I guess I'll like some who well try another.

As for FireFox I have to find my notes when I was trying to delete it. I
know I copied a lot of stuff pertaining to it.
Without looking at those notes I want to say I must have tried also with
uninstall/helper.exe, which I'm sure I found off
their site as well on the internet. Another reason why I say this I checked
the Mozilla program folder & I see most every file had the date 12/11/2013,
in every folder within Mozilla. If I'm right that might be the day I used
their 'Fix-It' option, after I exhausted all other alternatives.

It doesn't matter now, have a new computer that I have to learn all over
again how to use. Oh joy!! This old one (XP) is getting reformatted to give
to my grand daughter.

As for MesNews, tonight I found in searching but for a older version 1.6
Program Configuration for MesNews 1.6
In one of their steps for Server Management, under General, they say enter
the name of their news server in :Address server.
Which would be News.FU-Berlin.DE Is this correct?
Please note I've been a Outlook Express 6 user for many years but always
used our internet provider's newsreader, if I'm saying that correctly. Can
someone advise me on that which news reader I do add?
I ask this cause I notice in these instructions 'they' give you a Login,
Password & this gets enter in 'Authentification' tab.
So far as I can tell from these instructions these are the only areas that
needs to be filled in.
I'm also wondering since these instructions are for a outdated version there
might be a up to date one for the latest version.
Any thoughts on this?

OldGuy, thank you for those tips. I'm sure they'll come in handy as I get
use this reader.

ED P, thank you as well with your offer of help if needed. I'm sure as I go
along there might be a few things I need to learn.

I can't say enough how appreciative I am with everyone who has been helping
me since I first posted in this newsgroup.
I can't say I'm still not over whelmed in learning how to use this new
computer with a different OS & then to top it off learn a different email
program, find a new newsreader, at my age, it's tough! So I'm thankful for
the kind & generous people here.

That means my username and password are sent in plaintext,
and can be sniffed by my ISP. Eternal-September uses
authentication and takes a username and password. So
I have to tick the box for that. Otherwise, the reader
will not offer those to the server. (Or if it does,
it uses an account name of "mesnewsonly" or something.)

So basically four entries, then figure out the tick boxes
as a function of having a username or not, as well as ticking
something to select port 119 (unencrypted) or some other
port number (SSL encryption). I don't know if that's documented
somewhere in the mesnews help or not. Each server can have
four different port numbers, for various levels of
encryption. The 119 port is a pre-NSA "we trust you" choice :-)

HTH,
Paul
