The fix to making an HP laserjet print from Windows XP (assuming that
you upgraded your OS) is to go into your BIOS and change the parallel
port setting from ECP to EPP. After 2 months of struggling with this
I made this change and now my HP Laserjet 6P works fine.

Just because that worked for you doesn't make it a panacea for everyone
having problems with an HP LaserJet under XP. You might be giving some folk
false hope.

This is not just an XP-related problem, nor is it just HP printers
that are affected. I have had no end of printer communication problems
that have been cured by "downgrading" the printer port to EPP. It is
now the first thing I check when someone has problems with a new
priner/printer port combination, particularly when the printer was
previously known to be working.
