What's Wrong with 10 ?!
From items mentioned in previous postings :
[1] The troublesome updating issue - I want to update, if and when, and with what, I choose. [2] M$ gathering my personal data. - This is the biggest issue IMHO ! [3] 2D FLUGLY (not 3D skeumorphic like 3.0 through 7) [4] The 'Start Thing' [5] "The Metro" in general [6] removal of features that were STANDARD in earlier releases (like 7) [7] removal of USER CUSTOMIZATION (so everyone has the same equally MEDIOCRE 'experience') |

But that having been said: 1) You can update with the media creation tool or go here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...d/windows10ISO and do it anytime you want (till the end of July). Not sure about your "with what I choose" comment. 2) You can stop some/most of it, but I think you have to get a grip on the fact that everyone is gathering info on you. Google search, online shopping/browsing, grocery stores that give out those member cards are tracking buying habits etc. 3) This I agree totally with. 4) I grant that it's not the easiest, but after a year, it's grown on me. I had a friend that insisted on putting all his favorite most used program on the start menu as small tiles. I tried it, and it's a lot better than trying to find the everyday items on that hell of a menu. And you can group the tiles too. It kinda grows on you if you give it a chance. 5) See above. 6) Can't say anything here. I've moved through all versions sequentially (no skipping version except Vista) and haven't seemed to lose anything. But that could be my usage habits. 7) I've got mine quite customized, and I've seen screenshots from others that have really gone overboard. Granted I will give you that 10 is less tolerant to change, most of the reason I went to Linux Mint Cinnamon, as I can tweak the living crap out of the appearance. Of course this is just one persons view. No need to start a flame war, I've seen lovers and haters here on these groups, and to each his own, nobody is right or wrong, it's just opinionated. As said before, my usage habits may not be another's and I may tolerate change better than another person. Good luck either way. |

I bought a used ThinkPad with Win7Pro and updated both it and the Desktop to Win10Pro and installed Classic Shell so that they no longer look like the touch-screen devices that they are not. The "desktops" look the same as they did with Win7Pro. I have encountered no problems. I don't use Edge, just as I did not use IE. I use Thunderbird for email. Mostly I use Linux these days, but I have no more complaints about Win10 than I did about Win7. Perce |

All of the gui items you can turn off or change mostly (thank goodness because metro sux!!). I don't care for 10 just like I didn't care for most newer windows versions (I did like win 7 and win xp), but the fact of the matter is that it is windows under the hood so it does what we need it to do and our corporate technology culture is built around it so as much as I don't care for it, I can mod it to look and function mostly like 7 or 8.1 without the metro interface, change all of the privacy settings that I can and in the end, our company is moving to it. There are features in it that users like and some of them also like the surface pro 4. Most sill run 7 but I have tested all of our apps on 10 and we are moving to 10. |

For me, the most maddening thing about 10 is that it periodically changes the default programs. For example, yesterday the default for ..pdf was changed to Edge. I have a favorite program I use to read pdf files and I don't want it changed. It took me a little time to figure out how to change back to the pdf reader I want. This seems to me to be totally unnecessary. I guess the big anniversary update will cause all the defaults to change again. This is a major annoyance that no one needs to deal with. |

I found myself using these two programs http://defaultprogramseditor.com/ and http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html The first I think allows you to export the registry changes. I did this for a few in Win8.1 and then when I got to 10 I could just click the ..reg file and make the adjustments. You can also change icons etc. I've changed the "edit" on the right click to open one program but "open" to open another. i.e.PNG will open a viewer but edit with photoshop. |

If you think you're unhappy, imagine how a Windows Insider user feels, when they get an OS upgrade every few days! What happens is, after a while you just stop customizing things. For a PDF, I just drag and drop it onto the program I want. In fact, the PDF reader icon sits in the same folder as my Downloads :-) ******* To relate a funny story, this comes from yesterday. On the Win10 Insider edition, I have a definite hate on, for the Power option that causes the screen to go blank after 10 minutes. The screen is set to go away after 10 minutes. This is the way Microsoft likes it. Now, I've been customizing this since at least WinXP. Setting it to 2 hours instead of 10 minutes. 2 hours is *my* preferred value. On Windows 10, every time a new OS comes in, it goes back to 10 minutes. On Windows 10, if a new graphics driver comes in (back when Microsoft was experimenting with autopatching video driver defects), the time would go back to 10 minutes. So yesterday, my OS is set back to two hours the way I like it. OK. I run a "Power troubleshooter", from the Troubleshooter Control Panel section. Not knowing that it is going to "auto-fix" things I did not want auto-fixed! I was hoping it would have an option to fix Hibernation. And the funny part is - the Troubleshooter finishes its run, saying it "fixed stuff" - I look at the detailed report - Report says "your screen blank time is too long, so we fixed it". - screen blank time is back to... 10 minutes. As they say in BorgLand, Resistance is Feudal. So even though the screen blank time is programmable by the user, the correct answer is... 10 minutes. Grrr. Paul |

Paul Is there a command line reference that would allow you to script all these customizations? Seems that would make the problem go away. I see tutorials that describe how to fix one issue with some arcane command line including a globally unique identifier that references the customization. Here's an example: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} I've never been able to search for a customization and find the required magic number. At one time, there was a script creator that just tracked your GUI interaction and could reproduce it at a later date. Don't remember the name. |
