Default Schadenfreude! October "surprise" update keeps on giving!

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/1...ows_10_update/

"The 1809 build of Windows 10 and Windows Server is fast becoming
infamous, after Redmond pulled it shortly after release when it started
deleting people's files and stumbling in other ways. Redmond reissued
the software on Tuesday, and today it's clear you shouldn't rush into
deploying it, if installing it at all, in its present state."

The article points out the following major problems with the update:

* In Windows Explorer, a red X appears on the mapped network drives.
* Mapped network drives are displayed as Unavailable when you run the
net use command at a command prompt.
* In the notification area, a notification displays the following
message: 'Could not reconnect all network drives.'

oops. it gets worse:

"if you're using a Radeon HD2000 and HD4000 graphics card from AMD,
you're out of luck. The new Windows build will throw out an
"INVALID_POINTER_READ_c0000005_atidxx64.dll" error code and lock the
screen."

(another irritation is also mentioned, a sort of catch 22 involving a
manufacturer update)

After the PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED "forced update" problems, deleting all of
your data files being _ONE_ of those, loss of sound another, and
everything ELSE that could possibly go wrong, this "Murphy's Law" update
deserves the following SCHADENFREUDE from a Win-10-nic "denier":

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Got Linux?

and, out of the grooveyard of forgotten favorites (in alt.hacker) I made
THIS post on 10/23, titled "Windows 10 is officially a **** show" [from
the article title over on 'The Register']

=============

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/1...ows_10_crisis/

(title quoted from the article)

quote
In 2014 Microsoft decided it could do a better job if it discarded a lot
of software testers. This bright new dawn was lauded at the time by
Peter Bright at Ars Technica in a piece titled "How Microsoft dragged
its development practices into the 21st century". Testers were soooo
20th century.

the article also links to THIS for reference:

quote
The previous month, Microsoft had laid off many of its Windows testers.

And so, what we've been observing, how Micro-**** has basically FIRED
their QA staff so that 'Insiders' can do it for FREE, by CRAMMING
updates UP OUR ASSES whether we want them or not, and using USER
EXPERIENCE to fix the MANY problems [such as the last couple of weeks
from the October 'surprise' updates complete with broken audio and
BSOD's and actually *DELETING* *YOUR* *DATA* *FILES*], and the FACT that
the 'insiders' aren't representative of the normal user base.

And even though A LARGE NUMBER of insiders did NOT want "certain
features" (2D FLAT, forced updates, ads, spying, slurp, 'start thing',
etc. etc.) we got it *ANYWAY*. because Micro-**** does NOT listen to
what the customer wants any more. They just CRAM! WHATEVER! THE! HELL!
THEY! WANT! UP! EVERYONE'S! ASS! WITHOUT! LUBRICANT!!!

And, here are some 'evidence links' (from the article) regarding WHY!
FORCED! UPDATES! ARE! ****ING! STUPID!!!!!

First, THIS LAST OCTOBER UPDATE:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/1...ows_10_pulled/
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/1..._deletion_bug/
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/1...10_1809_audio/
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/1...oblem_roundup/

Then the LAST TIME they did this, back in April, it was pretty bad, too:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/0...or_windows_10/
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/0...te_woes_redux/

After pointing out all of this, and more, the article then concludes
[around the middle of it, anyway]:

quote
Windows 10 is officially a **** show.
/quote

Lots more in the article too. these are just some of the more
interesting hilights.

And a really big fat SEE WE TOLD YOU SO to Micro-****!!!

When you include this latest complete cock-up and pooch screw version
from last tuesday (the "november" version of the "october" **** show
update) it's worthy of multiple face palms and a ****PILE of Schadenfreude!

Again: Got Linux?

And... One... More... TIME!!!

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/1...10_1809_intel/

Deja Vu just isn't enough. It's "Groundhog Day!" [Bill Murray can't
get his Win-10-nic updated and keeps having to live it over, and over,
and over again]

And from that earlier 'The Register' article

quote
Windows 10 is officially a **** show.
/quote

Yes. it is!

Again: Got Linux?

And again and again - Got Linux? Or FreeBSD.
