Default Selecting icons

Hello, I would like to select icons in a row or column without it selecting
other parts of my desktop icon selection.

For example:
Selecting icons in a column selects icons to the right (in a word wrap type
fashion) selecting from the left and all the way to the right.
Before in 2000 (I believe) you can select a column, in cases when you
download pictures and want to delete a few that have been placed on your
desktop. Funny, they do not place themselves right to left, but vertical.
Is there a way to allow me to select a column by itself? I am not getting it.

I'm not entirely certain what you're asking, but you can select groups of
icons in different ways than holding the Shift key (which is what I think
you're doing) -- you can also Control-click icons to select individual
icons, or you can drag a box around any given group of icons to select just
the icons within the box. Any of these methods can be used in conjunction
with each other (i.e. drag a box around a group of five icons, then
control-click three others outside of the box).
