Quietly.

You broke the code, by not knowing that *you* do the testing.

Nobody provides money back guarantees.

And if it doesn't work for you for some reason,
you do the debug as best you can.

It's how people make individual contributions here,
by providing *constructive* feedback about their
home projects.

OK

I understand. I do do a LOT of experimenting on my Apple machines; not
so much nowadays on Windows

Do you accept the reason I gave you for wanting to know more about items
relating to Windows 10?

Sidetracking now! Can YOU throw any light on my question posed here?

I don't have to comment on placing two link-local
references in the file.

Instead, as a tie-breaker, I just reach for my MacOSX
installer DVD (.iso if you want), and look for the *original*
file.

As demonstrated here.

https://i.postimg.cc/mgyzzLTF/disc1-...-installer.gif

Note that the DVD is as old as the hills. It came in
the box of my Mac G4 quad nostril machine. I keep a rip handy
in the partition with all the OS installers stored.

That is a demonstration of how to do it.

*Your* recent install media will have the
most up-to-date HOSTS file information suitable
for your modern OS version. Thus you must repeat
the exercise using your equipment box/materials
to get the most recent file.

This way, I don't have to comment on it, just like
I wouldn't want to comment on the several flavors of
localhost formats and their meanings :-) (****ing
contests about which localhost format is "most efficient".)

Perhaps you are unaware that modern macOS software is installed DIRECTLY
from Apple via the Internet - there is no install media or ISOs.

So I'm no further forward! :-(

What if your hard drive dies ?

How do you restore a running state to the machine ?

"How to create a bootable installer for macOS"
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201372

"How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery"
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204904

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Catalina.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

# The back-slashes in that command, are escape sequences
# to cause the path to be considered as a single string.
# Without the back-slashes, the sudo command would see three
# separate strings. Thus, the back slashes must stay there.

Which apparently puts 12GB of stuff on a USB stick.
The item on the end, being adjusted to represent the
actual volume name of the device. Your USB stick isn't
likely to be named "MyVolume", but will be named something
else.

The Apple web support pages are kinda circular and
neatly bypass the issue, leaving it to the customer
to "prepare in advance". And we all know how many
people do that.

via internet recovery, where the mac net-boots from apple's servers,
then downloads and installs macos, even from a completely blank
unformatted hard drive.

they don't bypass anything and there's no need to prepare anything in
advance either.

Lots of questions! :-)

Apple has Time Machine - and I've used same for over 10 years!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Machine_(macOS)

It just *WORKS*!

There are, as YOU know, just two types of hard drive.

1. Those that have failed, and

2. Those which are GOING to fail!

I was one of those folk who learned my lesson the hard way - but that
was in the last century! ;-)

Have you any more questions about Apple for me?

File version: 5.4.25.0
Size: 1,255,936 bytes
SHA1: F9E2FB90F9B8E687162BE67E49B3AD734A1FCFF8

It comes in a ZIP file with a few other useful items.

And the guy is not an invalid. He's got fingers
for the keyboard, and skillz. And he badly needs
a hobby...

It's pretty old software, from around 2002 or so.

This is like a three-hop search that should take
a guy like David around 2 minutes to do. He doesn't
need to be spoon feed or pampered on this one.

I would be more sympathetic if the search took
12 hours to do, but this isn't one of them.

*******

This is a lot like my cubicle-mate at work. For
two years, I would be daily going over to his cube
and getting him out of some computer jam. Like one
day, he does the same wrong command 50 times in a
row. I'm watching this from the corner of my eye.
But he's too cagey to come over and say "how do you
do this, anyway". So after a while, I can't stand it
any more and go over for a visit... and I have to
do 50 "Undo" commands to "un****" his document.

Fast forward a bit, one day I'm chatting with him
and I happen to comment "you don't seem to need
as much help as you used to - what happened ?". And
he tells me "Oh, I got a computer for my kid,
so I had to learn some stuff to teach my kid".
The problem all along was "motivation", not "horsepower".
The guy was pretty smart, but he "hated" computers,
and you can't teach people like that anything, because
they're scowling all the time. But once he had a
motivation, to show his kid he was smarter than
the computer, that changed everything. It turned out
he wasn't so helpless after all.

There are MANY sources. How do YOU choose from where to download
software? I often visit the product site in Wikipedia and download from
any specified 'Official Website'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xnews
