Update your Flash Player (did Adobe flash player just jump fiveversions?)
What's up with the latest update to the Adobe Flash version?
http://i61.tinypic.com/6fsj0o.jpg Opening my Firefox 34, Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu, Canonical 1.0 browser to a flash video today, I got a message to update my flash version but I was surprised that my current version is 11.2.202.245 yet the new version is a whopping *five* releases later! Normally an update is just a minor sub-version change, or, if it's a major update, just one release number; but this is five numbers. Pressing the "Check Now" button at the Adobe flash check site https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html It reports: "Sorry your computer does not have the latest Flash Player installed" Your version 11.2.202.425 Latest version 16 Did Adobe really jump five versions in one day? Or, did something else happen that I'm not aware of (and, if I missed updates, why, or how did I miss that?) |

I checked my Mac's backups, and I had 15.x until Dec 19, when it upgraded to 16.x. All the changes since then have been minor vesions. I didn't search back further to see when 15.x first appeared. -- Barry Margolin Arlington, MA |

Or, did something else happen that I'm not aware of (and, if I missed updates, why, or how did I miss that?) From: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/...-versions.html There was a version 11.2.202.440 released on 1/27/2015 yet there was previously a version 16.0.0.235 released on 12/9/2014. Note that those are dev releases so ordering of version releases depends on when changes where made to each major version. They won't be in version order. They will be in dev change order. So they've been working on version 16 since early Dec 2014 (well, actually longer ago than that since code has to get written and reviewed before it gets released). Guess they decided v16 was stable enough for a public release. http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/...ase_notes.html I've always found it rude that Adobe deletes the downloaded file right at the start of running the installer. If there is an error, you have to download it again if you didn't previously make a local copy of it. |

you haven't updated in a very long time. That's the issue. I'm sure I have updated recently (within a month or two). The latest version is 16 - for Mac and MS. Adobe says that "11.2 will be the last version to target Linux as a supported platform." That explains why updating again still shows up as 11.2. $ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer Setting up flashplugin-installer (11.2.202.440ubuntu0.14.04.1) ... I think the problem was actually the Firefox version because, I just updated that, and things seem to be back to where they we $ sudo apt-get install firefox $ firefox --version (process:3228): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed Mozilla Firefox 35.0.1 So, I guess it was the firefox version but the error had said it was the plugin version. Very odd. |

Actually, Adobe did announce somewhere on their site, that the Flash numbering scheme had changed. But whatever the new scheme was, it didn't "stick" with me, so I can't tell you what it means. The release numbers seem to have accelerated for no good reason, and they're also not necessarily aligned from one platform to the next. If I had to sum up the new scheme, "meaningless" comes to mind :-( You can use the Flash test page here, to display your current Flash version, as well as a table of "latest release versus OS" at the bottom of the page. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Paul |

my current version is 11.2.202.245 yet the new version is a whopping *five* releases later! Adobe doesn't upgrade flash-player for Linux anymore, so 11.2 is the LAST versio, although minor updates (security and bug-fixes are still released). So although there is a 16.0 release, you would have to run M$-Windows or Mac OS/X for it to be installable. Google Chrome has a "pepperflash" that also is newer, but only works _with_ chrome or chromium-based browsers, it has a different API. For Linux/Firefox (and Seamonkey or Opera) 11.2.202 _is_ the last version, although it now does have a minor update .440 available. |

According to that web page, I had the right version all along. I think it was a false error, that actually, apparently, as far as I can tell anyway, was resolved by updating the Firefox version! Anyway, here's the table on that web page for others to check the version of their Flash Player: Windows - Firefox, Mozilla - NPAPI 16.0.0.296 - Chrome (embedded), Opera, Chromium-based browsers - PPAPI 16.0.0.296 - Internet Explorer (Windows 8.x) - ActiveX 16.0.0.296 - Internet Explorer - ActiveX 16.0.0.296 Macintosh - OS X Firefox, Safari - NPAPI 16.0.0.296 - Chrome (embedded), Opera, Chromium-based browsers - PPAPI 16.0.0.296 Linux - Mozilla, Firefox - NPAPI (Extended Support Release) 11.2.202.440 - Chrome (embedded), Chromium-based browsers - PPAPI 16.0.0.296 - Solaris Flash Player 11.2.202.223 is the last supported Flash Player version for Solaris. 11.2.202.22 |

This has been true since 2012/13, flash 11.3 was first released on 6/08/2012 as the first one NOT to have a Linux version; the final update release of Flash Player for the Android operating system was on September 10, 2013. Acrobat Reader for Linux/Unix is also not supported/updated anymore, the last one was 9.5.5, released on 05/14/2013 Did Adobe really jump five versions in one day? No, in the last 2.5 years, since Linux upgrades stopped. PS: all dates from the Adobe website. |

A security update is not a feature update, and many of the sites using flash use features from the newer flash. Security updates are still being put out for Linux. Also, many Linux users, like myself, use Google Chrome, with its built in pepperflash player that is the same release number as Adobe Flash. While it may be the same number it is not the same thing. In particular the Adobe DRM which many of the TV networks use to distribute their shows is NOT supported by Pepper flash, or anything else on Linux that I know of. |
