DropBox Changes?
Hi,
I signed up for DropBox (free version) so I can send a friend or relative a link to a file (example .ZIP) for him/her to download from my DropBox "Share" folder. That person did not have to be a member to download my file. Was there a change at DropBox recently that prevents a non-member to use a link I send to download a file? I sent a link to my other email address as a test, but I couldn't download the file as I did in the past (test). Thank You in advance, John |

You took the wind right out of my sails ;-) Hi Everyone, UPDATE: I decided to try it again. I logged into DropBox, selected a .ZIP file in my "Share" folder. I sent a link to my other email address. I used a different computer with an older version of FireFox (V14) and logged into my gmail (other email service) account. I clicked on the link in the email I sent to myself. Sure enough, I saw the same page as before. I moved the mouse pointer over the "Download" button. Note: The "Download" button is in faint display, which is typical when a button function is not available. The pointer did not change into a hand. However, I clicked on the "Download" button. At first it seemed like nothing happened, but after a delay, a pop up window (FF) occurred with the option to "Save" the file, which I did. Note: The file is a perfect match to the one I had uploaded to DropBox. John |

I sent a link to my other email address as a test, but I couldn't download the file as I did in the past (test). There is no folder named Share created by default when you created a Dropbox account. If there is a folder by that name then you created it, so check its sharing options. The *Public* folder is the only sharing (by everyone) folder that gets created by default when you create a new Dropbox account. Use the web client and click on the Sharing link to see what your account has been told to share. You will see the folders you decided to share. Your user-created Share folder should be listed there. Click Options to see who you allowed to share that folder or what other Dropbox user allowed you to share their folder. The other party DOES have to be a member of Dropbox to share a *folder* but not for a file. For a folder, you invite other *members* to share access to that folder. For a file, you have to set visibility of just that file. When sharing a folder, it says "Invite members to this folder". Where you sharing a folder or a file? Using the web client, look at the file you wanted to share. Click the Share button to the right of the file. Under the link to the file, check what visibility that file has. Visibility (access) can be "Anyone with the link" (so your friend giving the URL to someone else or someone intercepting your e-mail traffic can access the file) or "Only people with a password" (which means you'll have to provide a password that is probably different than your Dropbox account's password). When you looked at the file and clicked its Share button, was visibility already set to "Anyone with the link can see it"? With the free account, you only have 2 choices to share a file: anyone can use the URL or only those with the password can retrieve the file. Operation might have changed from how you used Dropbox in the past. It's a free service so they can change it whenever they want. Even for paid accounts, if they want to change their service then their TOS grants them permission. There is only one constant in the universe: everything changes. You cannot share a folder with a non-member. Maybe that's what you attempted to share. You probably should review the sharing setup on that user-generated folder (Public is the default created one, a folder called Share is something you created). If you are trying to only share a file, check what visibility got set on that file. I suspect if the folder (containing the file) is already shared (with another member) that you may not be allowed to share just the files inside that folder. Check the Share folder is itself not shared. The local Dropbox client does not have any options to regulate how a folder or file should be shared. When adding a file via the client, I suspect the default visibility is "Anyone with the link"; however, perhaps that gets amended according to folder options. I don't see right-clicking on folders using Windows Explorer for the folders that the Dropbox client is to sync provides any Dropbox sharing options. Use the web client to check what sharing you granted on the non-default Share folder that you created. While the Dropbox client is handy for synchronization (to one host to the server-side copies or between multiple hosts logging into the same Dropbox account), I've had to use their web client to setup sharing. For me, right-clicking on a file or folder in Windows Explorer doesn't show any context menu entry added for Dropbox. Selecting Properties does not show a tab was added for Dropbox to control sharing on the file or folder (from the client side). I can't even find a means of creating a URL to give someone else in an attempt to set sharing on my local host. I see no shell extensions (in context menu) or property pages (tabs in Properties) were added for Dropbox. I have to use their web client to get them to create the URL, to invite a member to share a file, or to set sharing on a file. Is the Share folder at the root level of your account or buried under another folder? What are the sharing options on the folder? Is it a folder or a file that you are attempting to share? What is the visibility on the file you want to share? |
