Default WinXP emailer won't open .GIF attachments ??

WinXP mailers won't open .GIF attachments ??
They opens JPG files fine.

I first noticed this over a year ago, but didn't have
time to get to the bottom of this. I thought perhaps
it was just a fluke limited to one machine, but now
it seems that all XP machines I send .GIF pictures to
can't open them. (People don't tend to mention this,
I have to ask them.)

(I send the email with Eudora 5.2. No other platform has
this problem.)

One XP user said she fixed the problem by editing her registry,
then save the attachment, then open it with another viewer.
(She also said it wouldn't open ZIP or EXE files.)

I call that a work-around.
Is there a real fix for this?
(For example, Eudora does not auto-open attachments,
but on-click, opens them with yer default viewer (Irfanview)).

Thanks!

PURE Republicanism?? It's now clear.
Six years of PURE Republicanism - BOTH houses
AND the Prez. Pure as it gets.
So?
Are you better off now than seven years ago?
Are you proud with what they have done to
America and her reputation? ...Your reputation?
....all that sleaze, lies and bribery?
How about all the killing...the torture? Proud?

If actions speak louder than rhetoric, then
name ONE good thing about Republicanism.
Just one.

Just one *real* thing.

Can't do it?
So? Your Republicanism more like a bad habit then?
Might be time to consider Change.

XP is not an email program. Outlook Express, that comes with XP is. Email
programs don't open email attachments, they are opened by the program that
the attachments file type is associated with. Associate gifs with whatever
program you want to use to open them.

Huh!?
You seem to be saying that all the XP users I know
don't have gifs properly associated?
So XP's default installation can't read gifs!?

That doesn't make much sense.

Horse hockey!

agree.

Ask your correspondents who are having such problems to post
here about it.

Yeah right. Since when do Outlook Virus Incubator users know
enough to do that? These guys are seemingly so helpless, MS
apperantly thinks a GIF file will EEEK!!! kill them!
" The Attachment Manager in Windows XP SP2 can help protect

Since I don't use the Outlook Virus Incubators, I can only
guess at the fix[es]. I've highlighted some of those.

"Outlook Express Ate My Attachments"
By far the most common complaint involves attachments, and the
tone of the complaints is often harsh. "Suddenly, I can't open
attachments."
"How dare Microsoft delete my attachments without my
permission."
and my favorite, "Outlook Express ate all my attachments!" In
fact Outlook Express does not delete any attachments, not before
SP2 and not afterwards either.
What it does do is block access to attachments that might
potentially contain a virus. The warning that appears in the
InfoBar when you open a message states this quite clearly. But
surprise and frustration often cause people to miss the part
about "access" and so jump to a faulty conclusion. Furthermore,
if you normally read messages only in the Preview pane, you will
see only a grayed-out icon as your only clue that access has been
blocked. .......

If the Attachment Manager identifies an attachment that might
be unsafe, the Attachment Manager prevents you from opening the
file. The following determine whether you are prevented from
opening the file or whether you are warned before you open the
file:
• The type of program that you are using.
• The file type that you are downloading or trying to open.
• The security settings of the Web content zone that you are
downloading the file from.

You can open a blocked file from a known source if you want to.
To open a blocked file, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the blocked file, and then click Properties.
2. In the General tab, click Unblock.

Medium-risk file types
File types that the Attachment Manager does not label as high
risk or low risk are automatically labeled as medium risk.

.......
When you open a medium-risk file from the Internet Web content
zone or from the restricted sites Web content zone, you may
receive a warning message, but you may be able to open these
types of files.

Low-risk file types
The Attachment Manager labels the following file types as low
risk only when you open them by using Notepad. If you associate
another program with this file type, the file type is no longer
considered low risk.
• .log
• .text
• .txt

....all else are "medium-risk"

Irrelevant. ...as I suspected. It's all mish-mashed together.

Attachment Manager in Windows XP
Service Pack 2 is WinXP.
That seems to be the problem.
