Running a Dos Program

I have some old DOS based software called First Choice. It worked perfectly on my Windows 95 OS - but my new computer has XP - and when I try and install the software from the command prompt - I get a run-time error R6009 - not enough space for environmen

Create a Shortcut from the installer program. Right-click on the shortcut
icon to get to the Properties. Go to Memory and set up some EMS and/or XMS
for it, and possibly reset the environment from Auto to a discrete value
like 512 bytes.

I had the same problem. I have PFS:First Choice version 3.0 and am
trying to run it on an XP system.

I kept getting the infamous R6009 run-time error.

I tweaked first1.exe memory settings and compatibility mode.
Memory
Conventional:
Total: Auto
Initial Env: 4096
EMS: 16384
EMS: 16384
DPMI: Auto

Compatibility Mode:
Windows 98
(all other boxes unchecked.


BUT I found that I also HAD to do the following:

cd c:\choice
set HOMEPATH=c:\
set PATH=

Then I was able to run first1.exe from the command line
c: first1.exe

I don't know whether this thread has 'gone cold now' but I have an
interesting variation on the problem:

I am a dedicated first Choice user (first program I ever used in 1993!)

Been using it happily for years on both Win98 and XP!

No adjustments have ever had to made!

BUT, just the other day I started getting the error message described
in this thread, so that's a mystery for you.
Any ideas out there?

If we could find out why it worked on my computer for all this timne
(been using Xp for years now - through a number of reformats etc) we
might get somewhere.
All solutions I have found on this thread and at other sites don't
work.
I don't know a lot of 'under the hood' stuff about computers, but with
a bit guidance perhaps we could find just what it was that happened on
my computer that caused the problem to appear, and in that then we may
get a general solution.
I can pinpoint the day it stopped working.
I have an XP disc-image of it working (just before it stopped) to
compare with the current 'not working' version of XP
I sort of enjoy detective work!
any takers?

I don't see ANY of the earlier messages. What is the error message you
refer to?

Windows XP doesn't have a DOS mode like the ones in Windows 95 and 98.
SOME DOS programs will work in a Windows XP Command Prompt window, but
if they try to bypass the Windows XP resource management features the
operating system may object with an error message. Other DOS
applications may require a multiple OS boot configuration or a DOS
emulator from a third party.

There are some situations where Windows XP will object to a corrupted or
missing system file when you attempt to run a DOS application. The
Knowledge Database on Microsoft's web site has instructions on resolving
that issue.

The "infamous run-time error" that one of the posters referred to was
this:
"error R6009 - not enough space for environment "


I have been able to fix it, but the real question for me was why this
had suddenly started happening. I had been using first choice quite
happily on a number of XP installations with no problems whatsoever,
and about a week and a half ago it suddenly wouldn't.

The question was what had changed on my computer that suddenly stopped
this program working properly? -- if I could find that I-Tunes 5, it
might help other users find a solution.

Luckily, because of my backup procedures, I was able to restore a disk
image of the operating system that was functioning a fortnight ago when
first choice was working properly.
By carefully checking what I had done since then, restoring the old
image and testing - retracing the steps of things that I had
done-installing programs etc I was able to discover that the culprit is
the new version of I-Tunes! (5)


I was able to recreate the situation a couple of times:
before installing I-Tunes 5, first choice works perfectly.
After installing I-Tunes 5 we get the error message: "run-time error
R6009 - not enough space for environment"

Hi geoffree,

I have finaly find this forum and registered so I could try to run FirstChoice. I am totaly frustrated. I have tried to set my memory as indicated, but I must be doing somesthing wrong. Could you kindly resubmit ALL RELEVENT setting for W/XP and FirstCHoice so I can try again? I have not been able to get rid off that famous error 6009 so far...
Also another question: I have now connected an HP printer via USB and F/CH does not have the option to print to USB. Is there any way to do this? It is not practical for me to connect my old printer every time I need to print from my old data bases. Please help.
