Can one upgrade WinXP Home from the Full version of WinXP Pro or is the
upgrade version absolutely necessary? (without a complete reformat)

Hi deborah,

Yes, you can use the Full version of XP Pro to perform an upgrade from XP
Home.

You can use the full version to do the upgrade as long as it is a full
retail version, and not the oem version.

Whether you are upgrading from XP Home or any other qualifying
operating system, yes you can use a Full version to perform an
upgrade.

However, be sure it's actually a Full version; many people
confuse the OEM version with the Full Retail version; an OEM
version can *not* do an upgrade.

With respect to whether I have the OEM version or the Full version.....I'm
pretty sure I have the Full version.....I bought it in a store in a box and
it says "For PC's with Windows 95 or earlier, or for PC's without Windows."
That's the Full version, right? I have a Windows '98 computer I would like
to upgrade with this version of XP. Thanks for your help!

Yes, you should be having the Full version. The Full version is also
considerably more expensive than the upgrade version.

Hi, however the upgrade version can perform a 'clean' install on a blank
hard drive, just as you would a full version.....

You're confusing things a bit. All OEM licenses are "Full" versions,
meaning that no earlier OS need be present to perform an installation.
Retail licenese come in two varieties: "Full," and "Upgrade," which
requires the presence of an earlier, qualifying OS for installation.

You're correct. This is the description of a Retail Full version.

You're welcome. Yes, that's the Full version, and you should be
OK using it for an upgrade. Unfortunately, though, you spent more
than you needed to, since the Upgrade version would have done
just as well for you.
