Default Windows XP Home - update hung.

Trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Express)
from the Micrsoft website.
Download progress reported as complete (1.9MB/1.9MB - 0
minutes).
Install progress reported as complete.
However, the Windows Update - Web Page Dialog box has
been sitting there reporting for 2 hours that "Windows
Update is installing the updates on your computer. Please
wait".
Nothing much seems to be happening, but if you try to
close the dialog box it advises that the installation
will fail.
What should I do next?
