Default How to recover offline syncronized files

I have a Win XP client that became disconnected from the network
shortly after it was set to move the My Documents to a server share.
Somehow this appears to have caused an error with offline files. When
you being up the offline folder on the client you can see the files
but they can't be opened. If you try to sync them it gives an error
on every file saying it can't copy the file.

I tried to turn file sync on and off and rebooted several times and
still have no access.

Is there a way to recover these files? The user had no backup and
moving them to the share was the attempt to set up the backup.

Thanks

Default How to recover offline syncronized files

Hi,
if I understand right,
the user haven't synchronized the files yet ?
What do you see under type in the Offline folders ?

Are you logged in into a domain (Can you access the server where the files
should be stored)?
If the problem is that you cannot get into the users profile, login with
another profile, map a network drive with users (the one that is affected)
credentials and open the folder where the files should be.

Please contact me if I wasn't clear or I misunderstood you.

Default How to recover offline syncronized files

Thanks for the quick reply.

"the user haven't synchronized the files yet ?"
The sync process started but gave errors that it couldnt access the server.
The drive was mapped to the server and the user had permission to access it.
I tested and verified that.

"What do you see under type in the Offline folders ?
"
When you open the offline folders on the notebook you see all of the files
as you would expect. If you try to access them it will open the correct
program associated with the file but the program reports the link is not
available

"Are you logged in into a domain (Can you access the server where the files
should be stored)?"

It is logged into a domain

When accessing the server where the files were supposed to be created there
are no files... Permissions are correct, full access for the user. The files
I manually created do show up.

The problem seems to be that the files were never copied to the server.
They seem to be on the notebook and not able to be accessed.

They were originally located in My Documents iin the user's profile. They
are no longer there but do show up in the offline files folder but cannot be
copied or accessed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Default How to recover offline syncronized files

I logged in to the local admin account and I can see the files in the offline
folder but just as with the user, I cannot open them. The path to the file
is given to a location the user does not have access to.

\server\home

It should have pointed to

\server\home\username

I checked the loaction on the server and there are no files or folders
located there.

It looks like the offline files tried to move the files to a folder that the
user did not have rights to.

Can this be modified? There is a real fear of loss of data and there are no
backup copies....

Thanks

Default How to recover offline syncronized files

Sorry for the late response.
I'm asking for the file type because you can copy your %systemroot%\csc
(Inside you have d1, d2, .... subfolders) folder to another location.

If for example all the files were word documents, you can rename each file
in csc folder from xxx to xxx.doc
There will be some files, that aren't documents but if the recovery is that
urgent I don't think that a few more clicks matter.
The only problem is, that if there was more then one file type, because you
will then have to try every file type except if you know the approximate
file size.

For example:
If you have picture scans, word documents and excel documents.
The biggest files will probably be pictures (psd, psp, tiff, ....)
When you recover the pictures, you only have two file names left; xls and
doc
So at worst, you will rename each file twice

But, I still don't understand.
If you look at your Offline files, what do you have under Synchronization
and under Availability or what do you have under Server Status ??
I'm asking because if you don't have files on your server
(\\server\home\username) you should open them if you open your server path
and you wouldn't have a network connection.

Hope that helps and please contact me again if anything is not clear.
