Default Unmountable boot volume error

Hi John,

Yes, it appears you have to have the XP CD. Judging from Helen's post
you might have to do a repair install to fix the problem, this should
leave you with your data intact.

If you do it check this site for detailed instructions:

Good luck

thanks Rodger ! I had printed this however The boot cycle from the HD will not allow me to go past selecting the boot types ( safe mode.. network.. ) no matter which one I select the next message is "unmountable boot volume". The tech note sate to boot

to the recovery console but I believe I ahve to have the xp cd in.. which I had disgarded.

Thanks again for your reply !

Default Unmountable boot volume error

I had this problem a few weeks ago, and after technical advice was told I had to reinstall XP from the disc. Luckily I did have this. so this is your best bet I think.

Boot from an XP CD and choose the "Repair (Recovery Console)" option
from the first menu.

When it has finished booting and stops at the command prompt enter the
following command:

CHKDSK /R

Note: If you cannot boot to Recovery Console from the CD then you can
create a 6 diskette set that will allow you to boot to the Recovery
Console.

And if CHKDSK /R does not fix the problem then your only option is a
reinstall. I am surprised that Dell would not make a replacement CD
available for you to purchase for your computer.

Good luck
