Default Not Responding errors

There would seem to be many more places from which programmes start than
you might think!

Msconfig is a Diagnostic Utility and not intended to be used to turn off
unwanted start up programmes. You do this from within each programme or
using a programme like Autoruns. Leave msconfig alone and try Autoruns:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys.../Autoruns.mspx

Look in Norton for ways to suspend scanning on Start Up to test it's
impact.

It would be helpful if you answered my earlier question. Is there a
direct correlation between the start up process and the Not Responding
messages? If the computer has been running some time are the Not
Responding messages less frequent, the same or more frequent?

Hope this helps.

Ok, I will run page file monitor in the next day or so and report
back on that.

As for my Adobe products:

Acrobat 5.0
Distiller 5.0
Illustrator 10.0.3
Image Ready 7.0
PhotoShop 7.0

I don't have any programs in my Startup. Learned that lesson a long
time
ago but it still takes 4 minutes for my icons to appear and to be
able to proceed. I'm wondering what is stalling it. You think it's
Norton? Even though it's not in my Startup? Is there somewhere else
I can look to stop it from scanning on startup if that is indeed
what's happening?

Usually when I get the "Not Responding" error, I just have to left
click my mouse, wait a couple of seconds and it clears up. Just a
little while ago however and once earlier today it hung for several
minutes and I was unable
to even get to my Task Manager.

Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to assist me with this.

"Gerry" wrote:

You need to run page file monitor to confirm exactly how much of the
pagefile is actually being used.

Norton will cause a particular problem at start because most likely
iniates a full scan. This alone can make a computer unusable until
the scan has completed. If you succeed in starting another programme
before the scan has completed there is every chance that you will
get a Not Responding message for the programme you have started. How
long does it take for Norton to complete the scan on start up? How
many files is Norton scanning?

Although you say these programmes have been installed for years I
doubt they are the same as when they were first installed. Adobe has
definely grown significantly in size over the years.Which of the
programmes I listed load on start up. Do they need to load on start
up or could you change any to load on demand.

If a programme is Not Responding it is still running. Just end it in
Task Manager and notice how the response from the computer improves.
When a Not Responding message is generated it is indicative that the
programme has hit a problem. It can then keep trying to resolve the
problem but in doing so only exacerbates the problem. It can be
better to stop the programme and try again at a more favourable time.

Is there a direct correlation between the start up process and the
Not Responding messages? If the computer has been running some time
are the Not Responding messages less frequent, the same or more
frequent?

What are the precise versions of Adobe you have?

Call me naive, but these programs (the upgraded Norton withstanding)

them to suddenly be a problem. Also, are they draining my memory
even though when the "Not Responding" error occurs, they're not even
running?

Thanks Gerry and Nass for the advice.

I have ACDSee 4.0 installed and it has been since shortly after I
bought the computer 4 years ago.

I have the full version of Adobe installed (again since day one);
however I only use it to read and print documents.

I have several graphic/photo editing programs intalled and use
them fairly frequently. I have PaintShop Pro, Print Shop, Photo
Editor, Adobe PhotoShop and possible a few others. All of these
have been installed since day one as well. I do have a large
number of photo's on my pc and I regularly save them to CD and
remove them.

As for Norton, when my subscription was up for renewal a couple of
months ago I somehow ended up upgraded to their latest version for
free instead of just renewing the one I had. Quite frankly I
preferred the older version, plus it took my Norton Utilities away
with it. I do think my "Not Responding" problems have gotten
worse since then. Coincidence? I don't know.

Other than the Norton upgrade and the IE 7 upgrade, I haven't
installed anything new to the computer. I even removed all my mp3
files to clear up 3GB of room thinking that might help. Why all
of a sudden is my RAM an issue do you think?

"Gerry" wrote:

Notwithstanding the comments by Nass I still think your key
problem is insufficient RAM memory. True there are other
problems but these would diminish with more RAM and the nature
of these other problems would become clearer. You should be
aware that Nass and I frequently compare notes as we tend to
respond to the same problems.

The need for more RAM can be verified by running a freeware
utility which gives better information on pagefile usage than
Task Manager. Using this tool will have a negligible impact on
your system.

Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage. Start it
to run immediately after start-up and look at the log.
Pagefilemon takes snapshots. You need to run it at the beginning
of the session at then run it again at intervals throughout the
sessions. The log is Pagefile log.txt. If you right click on the
file in Windows Explorer and select Send to, Desktop (Create
Shortcut). The same applies to XP_PageFileMon.exe.

A small utility to monitor pagefile usage:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

Note programs using undo features, particularly those associated
with graphics and photo editing, require large amounts of memory
so if you use this type of programme check these first observing
how the page usage increases when they start and whether the
usage decreases when you close the programme.

You do have the anti-virus programme I thought you might have.
Norton does bring with it a large footprint and this will have a
noticeable impact on system performance. There are other freeware
programmes which do the business without the performance
downside. Norton still enjoys a good reputation with business
users but is not rated highly nowadays for use on home computers.

ccApp is part of Norton

FontCapture (or should it be Font Capture) leads me to another
question. Do you use Adobe Acrobat Reader ? If yes, which
specific version? Are you just using it to read and print pdf
documents or are you editing pdf documents? There have problems
reported with some versions of Adobe and it has a large
footprint much like Norton.

Why would I need to know that? You need to tell the person using Norton!
You would find that easier if you used a proper newsreader.

Only try this after Windows XP has been running for 30 minutes and
any anti-virus scan has completed.

What anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes do you have installed.
If you have the anti-virus programme I think you have your system
may benefit from having a less demanding programme.

It is difficult to be sure whether the other error are being caused
by a stressed system have insufficient RAM memory or for some other
reason.

Default Not Responding errors

No, there does not seem to be any correlation to the startup process and the
Not responding error. It can happen at any time.

You both gave me a lot of suggestions to try and I've been busy so I haven't
had a chance to test any of them out just yet. Will post when I do.

Thanks!

Ok, I will run page file monitor in the next day or so and report

As for my Adobe products:

Acrobat 5.0
Distiller 5.0
Illustrator 10.0.3
Image Ready 7.0
PhotoShop 7.0

I don't have any programs in my Startup. Learned that lesson a long
time
ago but it still takes 4 minutes for my icons to appear and to be
able to proceed. I'm wondering what is stalling it. You think it's
Norton? Even though it's not in my Startup? Is there somewhere else
I can look to stop it from scanning on startup if that is indeed
what's happening?

Usually when I get the "Not Responding" error, I just have to left
click my mouse, wait a couple of seconds and it clears up. Just a
little while ago however and once earlier today it hung for several
minutes and I was unable
to even get to my Task Manager.

Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to assist me with this.

"Gerry" wrote:

Thanks Gerry and Nass for the advice.

I have ACDSee 4.0 installed and it has been since shortly after I
bought the computer 4 years ago.

I have the full version of Adobe installed (again since day one);
however I only use it to read and print documents.

FontCapture (or should it be Font Capture) leads me to another
question. Do you use Adobe Acrobat Reader ? If yes, which
specific version? Are you just using it to read and print pdf

reported with some versions of Adobe and it has a large
footprint much like Norton.

unwanted start up programmes.

Norton? Even though it's not in my Startup? Is there somewhere else

If the computer has been running some time

frequent?

What are the precise versions of Adobe you have?

I have ACDSee 4.0 installed and it has been since shortly after I
bought the computer 4 years ago.

I have the full version of Adobe installed (again since day one);
however I only use it to read and print documents.

Default Not Responding errors

It's taken me 3 months, but I finally got around to purchasing additional
memory in the hopes that it would easily solve my problems. I bought 512mb
and I now have 768mb and the "not responding" errors have been reduced
dramatically. For some reason I forgot I only had 256mb already but thought
I had 512mb so I would have purchased two 512mb's had I realized. Maybe if I
had the "not responding" would have been eliminated. Either way, I'm able to
naviagte my computer much faster.

Of course, it's not without side-effects. Now, I occasionally get a
grinding sound from within the CPU. I can't see how the installation of
additional memory and the grinding aren't related as it only started
happening after I installed it. Any ideas as to why or what I can do? Is it
damaging anything?

Any assistance is appreciated.

It could be just a coincidence. It's hard to tell what the sound is
without hearing it, but yes, it could be damaging. It's almost
certainly either the hard drive or a fan.

If the fan fails, overheating can be the result, and that can damage
many things.

If it's the hard drive, it may be about to fail. Be sure you have an
up-to-date backup of anything you can't afford to lose, just in case.

Sorry for my poor choice in technological terminology as I was just using CPU
to describe the tower. Now I'm all worried that my hard dive is going to
fail me (I'm in the process of backing up files as I type this though). When
I added the memory it was the first time ever in over four years that I had
opened up the computer. Lots of dust in there. I cleared it out with Air
Duster and then added the memory. I will say that the grinding noise seems
to happen when I visit certain websites. Don't know if this is indicative of
anything but thought I'd throw it out there.

OK, but that's inaccurate and misleading, and will confuse people. The

CPU.

From what you've said, it should certainly be a concern.

Excellent! You should do this periodically. The result of not doing so
can be overheating and hardware failure.

That seems very odd. If it's a hardware issue, what web site you're at
should be irrelevant. What web sites are they?

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

I ran a defrag afterwards (which I do do periodically anyway).

I hope all of that makes sense to you. Let me know if you can discern
anything from it which might be causing my problem.

Thanks.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and

Sorry for my poor choice in technological terminology as I was just
using CPU to describe the tower. Now I'm all worried that my hard
dive is going to fail me (I'm in the process of backing up files as I
type this though). When I added the memory it was the first time
ever in over four years that I had opened up the computer. Lots of
dust in there. I cleared it out with Air Duster and then added the
memory. I will say that the grinding noise seems to happen when I
visit certain websites. Don't know if this is indicative of anything
but thought I'd throw it out there.

Of course, it's not without side-effects. Now, I occasionally get a

The CPU is your processor, an electronic chip, and has no moving

CPU.

I can't see how the installation of
additional memory and the grinding aren't related as it only started
happening after I installed it. Any ideas as to why or what I can
do? Is it damaging anything?

It could be just a coincidence. It's hard to tell what the sound is
without hearing it, but yes, it could be damaging. It's almost
certainly either the hard drive or a fan.

If the fan fails, overheating can be the result, and that can damage
many things.

If it's the hard drive, it may be about to fail. Be sure you have an
up-to-date backup of anything you can't afford to lose, just in case.

Thanks Gerry and Nass for the advice.

I have ACDSee 4.0 installed and it has been since shortly after I
bought the computer 4 years ago.

I have the full version of Adobe installed (again since day one);
however I only use it to read and print documents.

There are other freeware
programmes which do the business without the performance
downside. Norton still enjoys a good reputation with business
users but is not rated highly nowadays for use on home computers.

reported with some versions of Adobe and it has a large
footprint much like Norton.

Default Not Responding errors

There seems to be only one obvious problem arising out of the
information you have provided. ImageDB.ddf is a colossal file and is
multi-fragmented. You need to defragment it. The sheer size is most
likely the problem but to make sure that the file is not in use I would
run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode. Running the programme more than
once, perhaps as many as three times to get a result. However, before
running Disk Defragmenter you should clean up the drive.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb.
Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time
find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit.
When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Does ImageDB.ddf still appear in the Most fragmented files list?

I looked at the system requirements fpr ACDSee 4 and Adobe Photoshop 7.
They do seem to be quite modest. Adobe Photoshop 7 has been updated a
number of times. Do you have the latest update?

Do you leave the computer on 24/7?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? Can
you provide figures immediately after starting your computer anlso after
you have started your favourite photographic program and doing what ever
you do with program.

I hope all of that makes sense to you. Let me know if you can discern

Thanks.

Sorry for my poor choice in technological terminology as I was just
using CPU to describe the tower. Now I'm all worried that my hard
dive is going to fail me (I'm in the process of backing up files as
I type this though). When I added the memory it was the first time
ever in over four years that I had opened up the computer. Lots of
dust in there. I cleared it out with Air Duster and then added the
memory. I will say that the grinding noise seems to happen when I
visit certain websites. Don't know if this is indicative of
anything but thought I'd throw it out there.

It's taken me 3 months, but I finally got around to purchasing
additional memory in the hopes that it would easily solve my
problems. I bought 512mb and I now have 768mb and the "not
responding" errors have been reduced dramatically. For some
reason I forgot I only had 256mb already but thought I had 512mb
so I would have purchased two 512mb's had I realized. Maybe if I
had the "not responding" would have been eliminated. Either way,
I'm able to naviagte my computer much faster.

Of course, it's not without side-effects. Now, I occasionally
get a grinding sound from within the CPU.

The CPU is your processor, an electronic chip, and has no moving
parts. Wherever your grinding sound is coming from, it's *not* the
CPU.

I can't see how the installation of
additional memory and the grinding aren't related as it only
started happening after I installed it. Any ideas as to why or
what I can do? Is it damaging anything?

It could be just a coincidence. It's hard to tell what the sound is
without hearing it, but yes, it could be damaging. It's almost
certainly either the hard drive or a fan.

If the fan fails, overheating can be the result, and that can
damage many things.

If it's the hard drive, it may be about to fail. Be sure you have
an up-to-date backup of anything you can't afford to lose, just in
case.

Default Not Responding errors

As I mentioned, in the past I have defragmented and it's always defragmented
without issue or errors so I was surprised to see that today. Not sure what
the ImageDB.dff file is. I will try your suggestions and report back.

I am not sure if I have the latest Adobe Photoshop updates or not. I will
look into that as well.

I don't leave the computer on 24/7 per say. When not in use, I usually have
it in Hibernate mode. I do reboot it about once a week or when updates
require it or when I feel it necessary. Is putting it in hibernate a bad
thing. Would it be better to turn it off or just leave it on instead?

I would say ACDsee is the most used photo progam on my pc. It's what I use
to view any and all pictures and I frequently do so.

I'll report back tomorrow with more details.

Thanks again for your assistance.
