I Cannot access the "start" button....task bar is part of what is

missing.
Basically if you imagine a large screen full of your wallpaper, that is

what
I have on my desktop....no icons, no task bar, no right click, no

anything,
just a large picture of my beautiful greyhound snoozing.

I have tried to boot in safe mode and that just got me a big black screen
with safe mode written in the corners (wallpaper didn't load for obvious
reasons)...still no taskbar or icons. Also, my attempt to run "sfc /
scannow" as you directed was not successful.

Hmm, well if you have a 'real' WinXP CD (upgrade, retail, OEM, makes no
difference) then you can try either the recovery console, or a 'repair'
install. If however you just have a 'recovery CD' from Compaq, then
that's likely to reset your PC to 'factory fresh' state (i.e. lose all
your documents).

(Since you mention 900 Mhz, I guess the PC maybe pre-dates WinXP, and
you installed it yourself, in which case repair install looks like the
best option from here. If you upgraded Win98/Me to WinXP, strange things
have been known to happen sometimes. 8,)

Bah!

(thanks for your help, I am not in any way "bah"ing you)

Ok, I am off to try the repair function from the XP disk...wish me
luck...and if you don't hear from me, I am deep in the darkest crevices of
XP hell.
