Default SP2 On XP Home

I downloaded and installed SP2, just like Microsoft said through automatic
updates. After a couple of days, I turned the computer on and before it got
to the Windows desktop, the computer restarted itself. It kept on doing
that. I went into safe mode and searched on how to stop it. I stopped the
computer automatically restarting. Instead of going to the Windows desktop,
the screen went a dark blue and the following message came up:
"STOP: c000021a {fatal system error}
The Windows Logon Process System process has terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0x00000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down"
The computer turned off. I went into safe mode and found out what it was.
I tried to use system restore, but that kept crashing the computer too. It
refused to return to a previous point. I found out that I should use the
recovery console to fix it. I installed the recovery console from the XP CD
and followed the steps given. It didn't work. After, the console kept
asking for an administrator password, but I read I had to leave that blank.
I couldn't access safe mode as the computer kept freezing. I contacted a
friend of mine, who helped install a new hard drive. I managed to access
some of the folders from C:, but some stuff could not be accessed. I kept
receiving a message saying "access is denied". On Tuesday, the folders
somehow opened but I could not open the documents contained inside. It kept
giving messages about "access rights" or "access denied". I searched the
Microsoft Knowledge Base and saw it had something to do with encryption. I
followed the steps in the articles and discovered that those solutions did
not apply to my problem. Now, the folders have returned to access denied. I
really need the documents contained in the folders. Can anyone help? I'm
not sure if SP2 is uninstalled, but I'm scared to check in case the computer
crashes again.
